Early Access Review
Great and unique rogue-lite beat'em-up where you unlock perks by copying enemies.

The story begins in the past. Chiyo is on a quest to halt the machine and save her brother, but another warrior, Ritsuko, is there to prevent it since she feels the brother is destined for greatness. But when Ritsuko wins, she also sets off a self-destruct sequence linked to Chiyo's life signs. The whole place explodes. The next image shows Chiyo, alive and well, emerging from a pod 200 years later. What is the big twist? The body belongs to Chiyo, but the mind belongs to someone else.

Story is told in visual novel style, with text at the bottom and character portraits. The whole thing might be a bit tricky to follow because it includes Sci-Fi elements and terms from the game’s world that you still have to get familiar with. Art is amazing.

The action beat'em-up game is mainly about attacking, therefore the majority of the keys and buttons are dedicated to offense. Naturally, you have the jump and evade move, which allow you to avoid enemy attacks. However, evade includes a stamina bar, which prevents spamming. You can only dodge twice or three times before you have to wait for the bar to fill up.

Aside from your basic attack, you have a skill button that allows you to perform special moves. Activating them is simple because you only need to press one of the directional buttons and the skill button. Pressing the skill button allows you to launch a secondary attack as well. There is no limit to their use, so you can spam them as often as you like.

Another fun element is the counter-attack, which may be used with either of the two main attacks, but it must be timed perfectly with the enemy attack to work. While it also works on projectiles, the timing is extremely tight due to the quick and chaotic nature of the action.

The gameplay contains some rogue-lite elements. Action takes place in a limited arena, where you have to beat up anyone who turns up. Once you have cleared all of the waves, you can collect your awards and move on to the next arena. The number of awards is determined by your performance, and you can choose one of three randomly chosen loot. There is health, material, and so on.

The game’s unique mechanic is override. When you have removed most of an enemy’s health, you can hold down the "override" button to copy its appearance and fighting style. There are approximately 15 enemies, each with various unique special abilities, just like the main character. Of course, you can always return to the default hero, but you cannot switch between enemies. Because enemies come in various levels, you cannot override enemies of a higher level to prevent cheesing.

Rogue-lite also means you may not beat a stage. This is not a major concern because you will keep all of your materials and experiences. The exciting thing is that the more you "override" an enemy, the more you upgrade it. This experience accumulates even if you die during a mission.

When you fill up a character's experience bar, you can unlock the next class and a permanent perk, such as increased damage or special move improvements. Each character has 16 classes, ranging from class E to SSS. All of this may be reviewed at the base, where you also select missions and create implants with materials.
