Augmented Gaming has always been the big dream in boardgaming with roots deep in the XX century. And after trips like Atmosfear on VHS and DVD (we are talking early ‘90ies) and Dinoland as well as some experiences with franchise driven games the whole “automated master” system fell short until recent developments where this role has been passed to apps. And this game is exactly this: a huge experience of gaming in a new age and in a new dimension, giving a potentially static game endless replayability, because the mission specifics change, the map changes, the monsters change every time you replay even the same game. The impact is enormous. And it opens up a secondary aspect that can become huge in a very short time. Specifically, Fantasy Flight is now a game publisher in a DLC-driven economy and world, giving Mansions both physical and virtual expansion points and areas. Personally, I expect this behavior to become mainstream in most composable map games as well as most other games creating companion apps that make the experience more “alive” and less procedural.
