LOVE Virtua Fighter, but this being advertised as the definite edition of VF5 is kinda false. For one, you're SOL if you like single player game modes. The original VF5 had World Tour mode, this does not. Second, if you like customizing your fighters, the OG VF5 had much better options in that department. Customization does not even allow you to change the colors of the default items, and there is no clear explanation for unlocking additional items. It seems very much that this release was about as low effort as you can imagine. It's a shame, because the core gameplay of VF is amazing. I hope the developers decide to spruce things up over time, but I am very doubtful that will happen.

I bought this game because of Maximillian Dood's upcoming MVCI: And Beyond mod. I'm glad I bought this game, because it is a BLAST. The mechanic and gameplay are surprisingly solid, and the characters have very interesting and unique movesets. I mostly agree with the criticism about the art direction, story, and roster (no X-Men?!), but the superb gameplay is what makes this game a major win. I hope to see future MVC titles implement some of the gameplay mechanics from this game.

I just starting playing this game more seriously when Akuma was released. It is tons of fun! Learning combos and improving feels super addicting. If you enjoy fighting games, you can't go wrong here.

I'm basically a Balatro junkie who constantly needs his fix.

It's sick. Best fighting game of all time.

Source: Long time fighting game player, but never a Tekken fan. Until now.

A true minimalist's Mortal Kombat. Removes a lot of unnecessary fluff from previous MK games, such as environmental strikes, X-ray attacks, character move variations, several different forms of currency, and a slow grinding Krypt. In it's place are essential game modes, sparse customization, and an easy to understand method for unlocking items.

The true star of the show is the combat itself. Never has a Mortal Kombat game felt so smooth, creative, fluid, and action packed. Movement and reflexes never felt as important as they do now, and combat does not feel nearly as stiff as MK11. Mortal Kombat can finally go toe-to-toe in the gameplay department with icons Tekken and Street Fighter. I was initially skeptical of the new assist based Kameo system, but after spending time learning the system, I find it to be a genius addition to the series. The Kameo system is much more interesting to me than bland move variations. It leaves a lot of room for creativity, and rewards the player for experimentation and creativity.

The roster is another major boon for MK1. While some characters are arguably more useful than others, every character feels viable and useful. You have a unique mix of series icons (Johnny Cage, Scorpion, Sub-Zero), returning fan favorites (Smoke, Reptile), and a few throwbacks from the 3D fighting days (Reiko, Tanya, Li Mei). The character design is brilliant, and it makes grinding for skins and experimentation a real treat.

MK1 has the best story mode of any fighting I've played to date. While it perhaps leaves room for innovative storytelling from games like Baldur's Gate 3, the story it tells is intriguing, entertaining, and easy to understand. It has moments that hit you over the head with exposition, but it makes up for it with its intriguing characters, superb voice acting (save for Megan Fox's awful Nitara performance), and surprising character development. I hope to see future MK games add more innovations for better replayability, but what is here is great!

Some things I wish were a little better are the customization being very bare-bones, online matches tending to be a little laggy, and the overpriced DLC. The customization doesn't give you the option to have preset skins, which is a major bummer. I would have been cool with NRS giving up 3 profiles for each customized character, but instead we have to go into Customize each time we want to change up the skin. The online infrastructure needs work, as about 15% of my games are laggy to the point of unplayable. A wider variety of online game modes and options wouldn't hurt either. Lastly, $12 fatalities, $40 fighter packs, and $10 skins are bordering on disrespectful to the people who dropped $70 on their game. If they want to charge outrageous prices, they should go free-to-play.

Conclusion: MK1 is the best Mortal Kombat ever released. It addressed a lot of major gripes I have had with the series, and provides the smoothest kombat to date. Highly recommended, worth the money, and I look forward to what they do with the game in the future.

I understand the hate for the cash grab elements, but this is a finely balanced game of basketball. I spend the majority of time playing franchise mode, and have had a blast doing so. Due to the smooth gameplay, I give this game a solid recommend.

Performance is much improved with the updates. I run an Intel i9 processor, 16GB RAM, 3070 graphics card laptop. I updated my graphics card, set everything to performance and medium settings. Everything is running pretty smooth, and the graphics look pretty solid. It's a shame for a PC gamer to miss out on this classic due to it's poor launch. Do yourself a service, and play this masterpiece. It's one of the greatest games you'll ever play.

I think Halo is a pretty cool guy. Eh kills aliens and doesn't afraid of anything.
