What Remains of Edith Finch is a game developed by Giant Sparrow. I am ashamed to call this just a 'Walking Simulator'. Sure there is no challenge in this game, but video games should not have to be challenging by default. As long as it is interactive to a meaningful extent and gives feedback to the player based on their input, it is still very much a videogame.

There is no combat, you are never in danger in What Reamins of Edith Finch. The purpose is not to challenge your twitch or survival skills, but to open up your senses and take it all in as it ushers you in the shoes of Edith as she explores her old family home.

The cool thing about the place is how everything is left the way it was by the person who lived in that particular room till their dying breath. It essentially creates a snapshot of the time which is unique to the room. The attention to detail is staggering. There is so much stuff in every room, the densitivity makes it feel like someone had actually lived there. Even though Edith and the player never really met many of the people who once roamed it's corridors, the charactertization you get from visiting these rooms is more vivid and likely does a better job painting the person they were, more than any cutscene could ever hope to achieve.

The gameplay is mostly you wondering around the house and taking in all the photos, letters, and environmetal details to flesh out the story. However, it really caught me off guard when the game breaks away from this mold and delivers certain parts of the story in a way I least expected. I won't spoil it but it was beautifully integrated and unique to that part of the story. Most developers don't want to create a gameplay system which they will only be using once, but the developers here went out of there way to create varied gameplay systems to make the most out of the narrative, even if it was going to be used just once.

Is it not a long game, took me just a over 2 hours to finish it. However, the experience is something which will stay with me for years to come. When I finished it, I felt kinda sad but yet fullfilling and happy at the same time. Beautiful game, thank you Giant Sparrow.
