A reminder that there are good people in this world, and a place I can go if I want to air out my own feelings or support others who are going through difficult times.

I was having a tough time when I chose to check this game out, and it helped bring a light into my day. If you're looking for a fairly short but warm and inviting experience, definitely play this.

The scenery, ambiance, and dynamic music while you explore the mountain is beautiful. Despite its name, there is still plenty for you to do and explore, and there *is* a learning curve to the movement that you'll get the hang of as you play. The writing is simple, yet really effective, and brings you empathy for the characters in this world.

If there was a more dynamic rating system for Steam, I'd give this a 5/5. I can't think of anything I actually dislike about the game; it serves its purpose perfectly. No bugs, no flawed designs. Just a really uplifting experience overall that I came to love.

I've played 800+ hours of this game. This review is mostly catered to people who would like playing survivor, though I have played some killer and watched plenty of people who play killer. So, I hope this review makes an impact on some people who are deciding whether they'd like to support/play this game or not.

Gameplay Overview

In this game, you play as either a survivor in a team of 4, or as a killer. The killer's objective is to kill all of the survivors, and the survivors' goal is to escape. The survivors must complete 5 generators around the map and then open the exit gates. The killer needs to chase these survivors, and it's up to the survivor in the chase to buy as much time as possible for their teammates to complete the objective. When a survivor is downed, the killer can hook them. If a survivor is hooked 3 times, they die.

There are moments where this game's core loop really shines, such as when you're in the middle of a tight chase, where you're trying to telegraph the killer/survivor's movements and play around that. The chases force you to pay a lot of attention to your surroundings, and what the killer/survivor is doing. THIS is where the game feels most rewarding.

Despite this unique and, on paper, very awesome design, there are way too many flaws in the game's design, which I'll describe now.

Design Flaws & Problems

- The objectives for survivors are incredibly boring. How do you complete a generator? You go up to it and hold left-click for an entire 90 seconds, and timing a button press every now and then. You do this for 5 generators. THAT'S IT. If you're not being chased, this will be most of your gameplay for the entire round. This is true for other things, such as healing other survivors.

- As a survivor, your autonomy being taken away from you (where you have no choice other than to wait) is actually built INTO the game's design. When you're hooked, you have to wait for another player to save you. This can go on for over an entire minute. If the killer has downed you, but has chosen not to hook you (this is called "slugging"), you'll need to hold left-click to fill out a recovery bar for 40 seconds. Once that's near maxed out, you have to wait for another survivor to come pick you up. You can be slugged for an entire 5 minutes before you die. Does this sound fun? Do you want to hold a button on your mouse for several minutes and wait?

- There are unique perks in the game for each survivor and killer, ALL of which are incredibly imbalanced. Tunneling is such a big issue that the development team has created several perks to address tunneling, so if you want to survive longer, you MUST choose these perks. If you're a killer, there are also plenty of meta perks that will show you where survivors are and slow down generator progress, buying you a ton of time. And guess what? Some of these meta perks are actually locked behind a paywall for DLC characters! So, if you want to up your chances of winning, be ready to pull out your wallet and spend some more money on a game that already costs you $20.00.

- The game REWARDS unfair and boring play. Anyone running a meta loadout on a killer will almost always win their games. Do you want to win? Play a meta killer with meta perks and tunnel a single survivor out. You WILL win. Tunneling and targeting a single survivor is the optimal strategy, as the moment you, as a killer, take the opposing team down from 4 survivors to 3, the survivors are at an incredible disadvantage. If this happens early in the game, you've almost always secured a win. Have a look at this video of a tournament if you'd like to see what I'm talking about: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qel97SGunLE

- This game is incredibly buggy, and you can expect to run into strange bugs that take you straight out of any game immersion on a regular basis. I don't even need to cite anything for this. Just look up "dbd bugs" on YouTube and have fun watching the jank you find.

On top of all of these issues, it's incredibly hard to trust Behavior (the game's development team) as they're notorious for not fixing huge issues and imbalances for months and sometimes years after their player base makes them known.

Potential Solutions

As much as I'd really like to see this game shine, the ONLY way Dead By Daylight will ever reach its full potential and be an incredible game is if they did a complete rework and addressed ALL of these problems. The developers have built the game on a very poor foundation that rewards boring and unfair play, and the fixes they've implemented thus far have been minor band-aid solutions—there can only be band-aid solutions from this point, as the foundation is flawed, and must be reworked.

Where the game shines is in the midst of chases. If I were the team lead, and really wanted this game to shine, I'd begin working on a new project and start by programming the chases. I'd want to fine-tune it and make it incredibly fun for both the killer and the survivor in the chase. Then, I'd ask: "How do we take looping structures and make it extremely fun?" "With that being the core game mechanic, how can we build the rest of the game around it to encourage chases and prevent tunneling, and prevent the removal of player autonomy?" I don't have the answer, but I'm sure if Behavior tried creating something new with chases, and focused solely on that, they would find an answer. They're an incredibly skilled and creative team of developers. They can do it, and they have the resources.

Closing Notes

If you're wondering why I have so many hours in the game, it's because, for a while, it was just janky to the point where it was funny and entertaining to play. And when I did get into the midst of those chases, or made really good plays, it felt awesome! But those moments are rare, and the gameplay is mostly left-clicking or being left to wait for extended periods of time. I've since found better games that aren't imbalanced, broken, and are actually rewarding, like Hunt: Showdown and TowerClimb.

I know this review may have come across as harsh. If you disagree or have other points you'd like to make, I'd love to hear your perspective. Despite the fact that I don't recommend this game, I really do care about it, and want it to get better.

VRChat is incredible, even for those who don't have VR.

It's less of a game and more of a social media platform, as the focus of most worlds is to communicate with other players. Even if you don't speak much, it's still very fun to play and explore the endless amount of worlds people have put out there, and to meet the other players who populate these worlds.

There is an endless amount of things to do within VRChat, and I've already met some amazing friends. Even if you don't have VR, I strongly recommend giving it a try. It's what encouraged me to get VR in the first place.
