I started off really liking the first season of The Walking Dead game but I was losing interest by mid season. It seemed that many characters I enjoyed were either not getting much screen time or killed off while those I had little interest in or hated were still around annoying me. Luckily by the end I was back to enjoying things because I will say that the game did a great job of making Clementine and Lee good characters worth caring about as well as having good chemistry. I also really enjoyed the choices that the game had to offer except for a couple faux choices where choosing one led to death so there really wasn’t a choice. The combat was decent and varied. There were first person shooter segments as well as QTE sections. Both were handled well although I found the timer to be very short some times and found the hit detection a bit wonky at times. The puzzles in the game were fairly well done with the odd one I didn’t like. My main issue with certain puzzles were that I figured out the solution before Lee did but the game wanted me to perform certain things I didn’t feel were needed first. An example was when the game wanted me to try to turn a train on before trying to decouple it. I could tell it needed to be decoupled just by looking at it so I went to grab the tool but the game wouldn’t let me use it until Lee figured out it was needed by trying to turn it on first. The graphics were your typical Tell Tale style comic book graphics that I tend to like. The detail level was as good as Wolf Among Us or Tales of the Borderlands. The voice acting was fantastic all around.

I played Season One on Linux using Proton. It never crashed and I didn’t notice nay bugs or glitches. There were four graphics settings; an AA toggle and a resolution option. The game did have some times where the frame rate dipped low but in this type of game it wasn’t a big deal and for a majority of it the game ran at 60 FPS. The game had a 60 FPS lock. Alt-Tab worked. The game saves at checkpoints which are usually not too poorly spaced out but a manual save system would have been preferred. You can pause cut scenes but not skip them.

Game Engine: Telltale Tool
Disk Space Used: 3.55 GB
Input Used: Keyboard and Mouse

Graphics Settings Used: Highest; 1920x1080; AA on
GPU Usage: 9-35 %
VRAM Usage: 803-1192 MB
CPU Usage: 4-10 %
RAM Usage: 3.6-4.6 GB
Frame Rate: 12-60 FPS

Overall I enjoyed Season One although can say I enjoyed it less than Wolf Among Us or Tales of the Borderlands. It had a disappointing middle but the beginning and especially the ending episode were superb. If you enjoy Telltale style games you should give this a try. I finished the first season (five episodes) in eleven hours and thirty six minutes and paid $6.24 CAD for it which was easily a steal as it is worth the current price tag of $19.99 CAD.

My Score: 8.5/10

My System:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X | Mesa 22.0.2 | Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB | Garuda Soaring White-tailed-eagle | Mate 1.26.0 | Kernel 5.17.5-zen1-1-zen | AOC G2460P 1920*1080 @ 144hz | Proton 7.0-2

@Auej

I wasn't a huge fan of Kenny although I liked him more than Ben and Larry.
