PSO2:NGS is a strange game in some ways, but one I still enjoy.

Many of the progression decisions seem to want you to skip chunks of the game. Currently, an event is running which grants a ticket for 100 Million XP when you reach Level 20, allowing you to jump to Level 87. The current level cap is Level 90.
At certain points in the main story, and when you reach certain levels, you are given gear automatically - this includes at Level 65. While this year is weaker than other gear available, it is more than strong enough to progress to the level cap while using it.
Seasonal events are also regular occurrences, where players earn points which can be used to purchase cosmetics, gear and materials - the gear once again being battle ready for most non-endgame gameplay.
As such, you rarely need to engage with systems like enhancing and augmenting your gear until you approach 'endgame'.

'Endgame' consists largely of farming for both ultra-rare drops and large amounts of common drops to create best in class augments to either use or sell for in-game currency on the market - a market in which you can only sell items for 3 days in 28 without paying for Premium. There are also a number of 'ultta-high difficulty quests', variants of other quests with stricter time limits and limits on the number of deaths your party can have - these are tough when released, but typically aren't scaled as player power grows.

Many people believe the true endgame is Phasion, getting cosmetics and using them - there's thousands of different cosmetics to unlock and use.

Content is added frequently (every couple of weeks) but in small amounts (a limited time quest or new item drops). Cosmetics, largely obtained through either the in game market or a gatcha-like scratch ticket system, are added even more regularly. Larger content drops happen about once every 6 months, with a few hours of story and typically new areas to explore.

In addition to PSO2:NGS, PSO2 Classic can still be played. Unfortunately, PSO2 Classic has been put into a maintenance mode of sorts, and the in game economy for PSO2 Classic (separate from that for NGS) is utterly broken due to a particular quest giving significantly more rewards than others, but it still contains a wealth of content, as well as many cosmetics and Star Gems (a freemium currency which proves plentiful in the long run).

Quite a lot of users complain about the state of the game and wish it could be more.
However, even after listing out the above and reflecting on how strange it all is, I enjoy the game. The combat is quite dynamic, if a little simple. It feels like there's usually something to do, even if I don't want to grind it. Character Creation is comprehensive, even without premium items. This game isn't for everyone, and probably isn't a 'main' game for many, but I think it's worth a try if it catches your eye - since you can become 'current' in the game relatively fast, you'll probably be able to figure out if you like it relatively quickly!

Awesomenauts, oh Awesomenauts...

I remember, back in the summer of 2013, in the days of Humble Indie Bundle 8, that I found this hidden gem within the pile of games bestowed upon me.
I played, played and played some more, for hours and hours. I then began to drift away, finding other games like DOTA, but I'd always come back, just to be awesome yet again.
Now, this awesome game is going free for all.
I've bought like 6 copies of the game for my friends, I supported the kickstarter, and bought some awesome cosmetic DLC. Many reviews are complaining about the game changing into Free To Play, saying they've "Wasted money" although that is completely untrue. People have enjoyed what they bought, and have kept what they had before and more after this transition.

Awesomenauts is a 3v3 Action Platformer with MOBA elements, with a balanced cast, a cool new progression system and an easy-to-learn, hard-to-master playstyle. Give it a shot! It's free after all :D
