Early Access Review
A cool twist on survival games

Sad to see all the negative reviews - my friend group has been really enjoying this since launch. It's definitely EA and my review would be more negative if this was the finished product: the UI is pretty clunky, there are placeholder icons, there's unimplemented stuff, there are server stability issues. But none of that has stopped us from playing!

The aesthetic is great - I love how the worlds look, I love the sound design, I love vaguely ominous Puck showing up to chew me out for being a stupid little human. I love the progression design - you always feel like you know what you need to be working on to progress, and you can focus on it, or building a giant castle, or whatever as you feel like it.

I love the realms system - the estate hub system is damn cool and lets you (and friends) easily play when you want to, not when everyone is online. Want to knock out a lumber run before work so everyone can make new gear that evening? Easy. The minor realm cards are super cool and will only get cooler as more are added. Run out of resources in your mining map? Make another! Had a fight with your friends? Portal away to a new abeyance realm and build a new base. I think the mechanical stuff supporting co-op has been criminally underrated in this game.

And I love the crafting system - it's complex, and it's great for it. Want to make your Legendary Ratstick of Paddington or whatever? Can't just go punch a cow outside your base - you need to decide what fancy wood, stone, metal and leather is going to go into it, and then go gather it. If you think 'long dark' and 'green hell' are tedious it's probably not for you, but I love it.

Fingers crossed the internet calms its ass and us Realmwalkers get lots more content as it moves through EA!

Fun game I really enjoyed - the mission/puzzle layer gets old after a while but you can build up the ability to skip most of them, and the management layer is great. Lots of replay value and different viable strategies.

It's most of my favorite mechanics in games like Rimworld, Factorio, or Frostpunk, wrapped in a sci fi shell that manages to feel fresh and uplifting (even while murdering you). You can tell a lot of love and thought went into it - from the aesthetic designs to the balancing of resources to the (great) DLCs and soundtrack, and the feeling of milestones like planting your first tree on Mars is hard to replicate elsewhere. Truly a great game.
