OUTLOOK:
TRAINWRECK | UNDER PAR | ON THE FENCE | PROMISING | IMPRESSIVE

SYNOPSIS:
IMPRESSIONS:
Post-Apocalypse Builder Prologue (PABP) may not have a name that inspires, but it looks a decent city builder in the making. From my time with it; the setting already appeals to this fan of Mad Max. City-building seems on the ball. While manpower and resource management is streamlined so as not to need much attention. The policy system and random events provide some dilemma and level design hints at being engaging.

However I have my concerns as the potential of vehicle combat seems below par. Minimal tactical options will likely get boring quite fast, leaving player's wondering why there isn't a fast-track option for battles. The extent of how varied and good enemies and the AI is, is unclear. Polish and optimisation is lacking and the GUI needs some work.

My outlook for this game is ON THE FENCE due to the level of the demo. It does have a good core of features, though some if left unattended could remain underwhelming.
STATUS:
PABP includes a basic tutorial and one game level only
APPEAL:
For fans of colony builders with a post-apocalypse theme that is somewhat reminiscent to The Last Haven or Frostpunk, but with a Mad Max look, and the feel of a Unity made game

POSITIVES:
► PREMISE embraces familiar colony-building sim concepts, but puts its own apocalyptic spin on it.
► SETTING may be a well-beaten one, but it will resonate with fans of Mad Max rather than The Walking Dead.
► COLONY BUILDING is uncomplicated with a strong roster of 20+ basic structures across 4x categories, to fulfil the needs of the base with simplified construction.
► MANPOWER ASSIGNMENT and RESOURCE COLLECTION is streamlined that provides a strong level of control to players.
► EXPEDITIONS comprising of vehicles that can be sent across a map of the wasteland for resource collection and/or scripted missions has some interesting elements. While there are battles currently there are no random encounters. Manufactured items can be assigned to them, equipping them for repairs.
► 6x types of VEHICLES can already be readied for these expeditions. Each with their own crew size, armour rating and weapon system. Its a good start but more types and/or variants would be nice.

NEUTRAL:
► CONTENT provides a short taster essentially comprising of a slightly larger demo that includes the basic tutorial and 1x level.
► PRODUCTION has some good qualities and some bad. Graphically the game looks, though it feels pretty like a Unity game. A lot of polish is needed.
► AUDIOVISUALS look and feel like a Unity made game. From the levels seen they do a decent job of generating the right ambiance for the theme. However, without seeing more its not possible to make an accurate judgement.
► GAMEPLAY uncomplicated, streamlined but stagnant in parts.
► The POLICY SYSTEM seems to add to the overall theme, too with lots of branches full of sequential options, but needs to be viewed in the context of the full game. Right now its to easy to enact changes.
► RANDOM EVENTS are fairly standard fare, but bring some much needed dilemmas that effect the population or stockpiled resources.
► 15x previously unavailable achievements are now working. At least 50% of them are.
► A fair amount of additional level COMPONENTS include wanderers that wish to join the group, low tech. tribal settlements, strategic level projects and a gate/wall system that promises attacks against the colony.

NEGATIVES:
► COMBAT looks to be reserved solely for vehicles and has minimal tactical options. The convoy needs to last beyond a threshold of time. Vehicles can be ordered to position in a grid and their targets chosen from whatever enemies are there. Enemies can bring in replacements. Overall it feels a little too vanilla.
► OPTIMISATION for my 8GB RAM rig was a lot less than optimal. Reduced FPS (15-30) depending on whether the game was in a cutscene, loading screen or in game.
► The GUI has a standard layout but icons, text and tooltips are on the small side for the resolution played. There are also examples of tears in the panels.
► Understandably the prologue lacks a fair amount of POLISH which will hopefully be addressed in the full release.
► TIMED OBJECTIVES means that some objectives will ensure gameplay is forced before the limit expires.
► AUTOMATED WORKERS aren't calibrated to change their tasks on a dime, as I've noticed some to continue their last order before changing to their new one.
► GAMESPEED only has two settings and needs at least one really fast one as the current fastest is too slow.
► Was only able to grasp that ENEMIES come in at least two levels of post-apoc tech. and one faction was able to down one of my expeditions. Need more experience of these to make a determination.

SPECIFIC ISSUES:
► Laggy in the cutscene and loading screens.
► Some tooltips have minimal info or are completely missing.
► The GUI icons are way to small and the most important one; build icon, is located on the mini-map for some inexplicable reason.
► No prompt when overwriting save-games.
► Some mission text is incomplete/missing.
► Some event options can be triggered without the necessary requisite resources
► Random events cannot be minimised while there is still time left to make a decision. The same goes for the periodic arrivals that want to join the camp.
► Timer can freeze from time to time, stalling game progress.
► Its possible to build structures of resource deposits.
► Strategic upgrades can be reset on a reload.

Helpful review, thank you.
I admit I'm curious, although I'm hoping for a more sophisticated vehicle combat element before I take a look.
