Outlast is an indie first-person survival horror game where you play the role of Miles Upshur, a freelance journalist tipped-off by an anonyomus source to investigate Mount Massive Asylum, where a lot of really messed-up things are going on.

This is a stealth-based game and you are /completely/ defenseless -- the only options you have are to run and/or hide from the mental patients known as The Variants. The only item you have on your person is a camcorder which has night-vision capability, which you will need to utilize quite a lot to maneuver throughout the poorly-lit asylum. Of course, this requires battery power, those of which can be found scattered around in various places in the game -- use them wisely.

As terrifying as all hell as this game is, it's rather cliche as far as horror goes, and it's repetitive and very predicatble with the Variant encounters; you can usually always tell when an encounter is about to happen, sometimes just by simply surveying the area. Regardless, I still get scared because you have to move around through the darkness stealthily, having poor judgement on where the gore-lusting nutjob is lurking. This game also has its share of pop-out scares, which I hate and give me a heart attack every time.

The atmosphere is absolutely amazing. The game was inspired by mental asylums and real cases of mental illnesses, so the level design feels very genuine and authentic. The unnerving dark ambient soundtrack is excellent and really helps compliment the atmosphere of the game, There is heavy detail and lots of corpses, blood and guts lying around everywhere -- I often find myself staring at them because of how detailed they are.

Outlast has truly impressive graphics, very detailed sound effects, and is overall very dark and immersive. If you're looking for a scare, this game is pretty brutal.
