It's hard not to love Undertale. It's exceptionally good at tugging on your heartstrings, and the amount of effort put into every detail of its development is equally stunning. I get the impression that whoever designed it was really enjoying themselves, and their good feelings are infectious.

It's also hard not to draw a parallel to Earthbound/Mother 2, an old classic from the Super Nintendo generation. Much like Earthbound, Undertale lets the mechanics take a backseat and focuses on creating a mysterious world for you to explore and charming characters to meet and influence in different ways. You are given the option of playing as a pacifist or a killer, but given the sympathetic portrayal of every monster that you encounter (and the frankly primitive combat system), only an unconditional sadist would select the latter.

Undertale is a game of mystery and wonder, never content with any particular circumstance and flipping every expectation you can think of on its head. Make no mistake, you are going to feel manipulated and played for a fool. There will be times where you are simply left scratching your head about the insanity of it all. But for an Undertale fan, that too is part of the charm. This is a game unlike any other, an otherworldly thing that defies explanation. It will be surely talked about for many years to come as its secrets are gradually peeled away like the layers of an onion. Should you will it, you can join in and help unravel the mysteries with the rest of us. I can tell that you have the DETERMINATION.
