Quantum Break has been on my list for quite some time now, and when it finally went on sale I didn't hesitate to buy it. I didn't know much about the game, only that the basic idea of it involved manipulating time. I didn't really know what to expect before launching it for the first time.

Despite the fact that I took a big break half way through the story, (stupid move, I know), I thoroughly enjoyed it. The quality of the game, for the most part, remains consistently good from start to finish. It managed to balance a memorable narrative with a variety of characters that are both well written and well acted, with well thought out gameplay mechanics that keep the player entertained.

One of the main things that stood out to me was how the developers managed to incorporate a live action TV series into the game without being a detriment to the base game experience. The TV show comprises of four episodes, with each one placed at the end of every chapter. The way these episodes play out will depend on your choices and actions throughout each chapter. While I didn't get the chance to see how differently these episodes can play out, the fact that the developers spent the time to make these episodes in the first place is something that I feel deserves praise.

When playing this game, you can tell that it had a high budget throughout development. It contains quite a few recognisable actors such as Aidan Gillen, and the visuals are stunning to say the least. The cutscenes do a really good job at showing how detailed the animations and character models are. As well as this, some of the game environments are wonderful to look at. The amount of time they put into the visuals really does show. There are times where interior environments feel a bit repetitive but overall they did a good job.

Being that this game was originally an Xbox One exclusive, the PC version does have its technical issues. Throughout my playthrough, I experienced quite a few frame rate drops, and there would be the occasional delay when loading textures properly. I didn't, however, experience much in the way of bugs. There would be the occasional character model spazzing out, but nothing game breaking.

I don't really want to say much about the story. I think it should be something that you discover blindly, as I did. It goes from 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds and from there on it's likely to catch your interest. Although it goes into the concept of time travel, it isn't really that confusing. In fact, the plot is rather basic, and this isn't a bad thing because what it does have is really good. The game is rather short though. It took me around 8 hours to finish and the ending isn't anything special. It just ends with a rather anti climatic conclusion. This applies to the TV show too. The lack of a conclusion was really disappointing because everything that led up to it was brilliant.

Gameplay wise I would say it's mostly positive. As you progress through the game, you acquire new powers which change the way combat is fought. These powers can be upgraded using 'Chronon Sources' which are dotted around the map. As well as these powers, the game allows you to carry a maximum of three weapons. That's more or less it as far as depth goes. The game doesn't like you staying in one spot and shooting behind cover. You are expected to be constantly on your toes, and some enemies will make you do this. It's because of this, that the combat is actually quite fun most of the time.

However, the combat isn't consistent, in fact, there are times where it can become very off putting. Every single enemy is a bullet sponge. Enemies with no armour can take more than five shots with a pistol. When it comes to more heavier armoured enemies, you can be there for ten minutes, constantly moving around trying to hit them at their weak spots. This becomes a lot more noticeable in the later parts of the game. What starts off as something really cool and intense, becomes something so prolonged and boring it can make you fall asleep.

Overall, despite its flaws, Quantum Break was a really enjoyable experience for me. It kept my attention from start to finish, and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story game. The game could benefit from a sequel which would excuse the sudden ending, but it still holds strong on its own. I would recommend getting this game on sale as I did.

Pros:
-Stunning visuals
-Good story
-Great cast of actors
-Inclusion of a live action TV series
-A variety of powers to change the flow of the battle

Cons:
-A few technical issues (frame rate drops, delay on rendering)
-Weak endings for both the game and TV show
-Repetitive combat

Final Rating - 7/10.
