Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons is an adventure game where you must travel around to find help for your sick father. You and your brother have to find a way to save him before it is too late. As you travel, you have small puzzles you must solve, and you will use your controller to move both of the brothers more or less at the same time. Each can be moved, and each has an action button. Figuring out when to do what is the key to progressing as you enter various situations.

I got a little bit confused from time to time on directions or which brother needed to interact and when, but it's not anything that will cause much problem. I like the relaxing overall feeling of the game, and the emotional quality of the story was really great to experience. It is simple, but has a lot of depth in how it delivers all of that simplicity it features.

Pros

The graphics in this game are really nice. I like the style and I also like the various environments you enter as you move from place to place. Everything is quite immersive and has a great overall feeling attached to it. There are also benches you can sit at, and take a view of the surrounding environment in, if you so choose.

The simplicity of having movement and a single action for each character is also refreshing. This is not a usual thing for me, that I can recall, while playing games like this. I was not really sure what to expect starting out, but it really works out great, and the design of the game around this is also done very well to complement this idea.

The music and sounds are light. They are not offensive or overly annoying, which I find can happen with some games if they are overdone, or too strongly done. On default settings, they fit well, and I like the tracks and the lightness of the feeling they portray while I play the game.

The action/interact buttons are fun to use, and in some situations you can mess with various things in your environment. The boys will occasionally get into mischief in town, for instance. There are some nice little combinations of things you can do to create funny scenes as they cause trouble for people around them, or just randomly interact with the environment. There are a lot of different interactions used as you move from place to place, and it keeps things interesting.

Characters and creatures you meet along the way are a real plus, and I found this enjoyable. There is no true language, as far as I can tell, so you have to pay attention to gestures, or use your own interpretation of what they mean. Sometimes one brother will point to areas of interest, and it's pretty straightforward for the most part on what is going on. I like it, and I think it adds to the overall feeling and style of the game.

The story, and the progression as you move from area to area is done well. I especially like the emotional quality that comes forth once you reach a certain point.
On the one hand I really like this, and I definitely favor it in comparison to what I dislike about it, since it is smoothly done as you transition, but I would have liked a tiny bit of backstory to understand why everything is happening as it is happening. I think this would be hard to do with the style without something before the prologue, since one must interpret everything going on, rather than read text, or listen to spoken language.

Cons

Short, and I would have liked to enjoy a little bit more. I also tend to play longer games in general, so it's not a bad thing being short. If a game is well done throughout, then the length does not matter. Some may prefer a shorter experience if they want to get through a game in a reasonable amount of time, instead of it taking tens or hundreds of hours to complete all a game has to offer.

Very linear as a result of being short, but at the same time the story is still very engaging, and may be preferable to some people. I like a little more going on overall with extras, but the simplicity is a strong point as well with this game. I would have liked to have a little more little bonus interactions along the way, or just a few more general side things.

The story at first left me slightly unsure exactly what was going on, though you can tell to a certain extent. I would have liked to have a bit more clarity on the opening bits, but in general this wasn't too much of a gripe.

Conclusion

This is a real gem that I think almost anyone would really enjoy playing, especially if you like more indie adventure style games, or want to play a solid game that does not take too long overall to finish. There is something to say about the simplicity which makes the game very endearing, in my opinion. Many times less is in fact more, and this game definitely brings that point home. Everything in the game is done with care, and the entire creative work is really impressive. It's not the best this or the best that, but what it does do, it does extremely well.

The story, and your quest along the way to complete it, is a powerful force in this game. I would highly recommend this to anybody that likes something story-driven, while being not too complex, and hammering home everything it does do quite well. It is hard to argue with the many many positive reviews this game has received. After playing through, I can emphatically understand why.

This is one of those games I keep hoping someone will pick for me in Pay or Play because I really want to try it out but lack the motivation even though it's a very short game. I'd like to read the review but don't want to be spoiled:).

Good review! I love this game. With atmospheric games like Brothers, I can't resist playing them again on the pc, even after I've beaten them on PS3 because of the art, It really is a good experience that tugs at heart strings, especially for anyone who was the parent of brothers.

I am glad I have my sister and my brother. Even beyond, we're all a big part of this whole existential web of cosmos, so everyone's a part of this greatness, and so we're really not separate. Only by the limitations of our understanding of space and matter I guess...
