I started this as a New Light F2P and liked what I saw enough to buy both expansions (Including the deluxe version of Shadowkeep) and $25 worth of in-game currency. In the past month, I've sunk over 400 hours into playing it, and I'm still coming back for more. (Compared to Team Fortress 2 and League of Legends, it's lightyears better)
The story is good, the campaign is easy enough for rookies to play it before anything else but has better replayability than some games I've played (looking at you, Nuka World). The PvE plays like an evolution of Halo, but some of the changes make balancing for PvP hard. (Curses on all OEM Recluse Mountaintop Juggernauts.)
Personally, my favorite game mode is Gambit, which plays somewhat similarly to the Competitive Firefight game mode in Halo Reach, as it's roughly a 75/25 split between PvE and PvP.
My one gripe is they got rid of the Drifter's fixed-roll Bygones, but *shrug* c'est la vie.
