It is that time, the most favorable holiday in October, everybody bought their most horrific, chaotic, gut retching costumes while others spend time decorating the streets with carved pumpkins, corpses, spilt blood and many, many other scary props… When the sun rests and the moon sits high, these hellish creatures roam the barely lit darkness, ringing and knocking on doors almost pledging for it to open and to whoever does that will only be greeted by the excruciatingly loud words of ‘’Trick or Treat!’’ while the beasts desperately wait and hope while craving for the addictive, desired, sugary treats kept in your hands, after scattering like roaches to door by door, they retreat to their lairs savagely eating and stuffing themselves with the candy, injecting wild amounts sugar in their veins, pleased with their gathering after long hours of hunting. Oh! The humanity! For this being the very beauty of ‘’Trick or Treating’’…

Story:

It is the eve of Halloween night as our beloved Amelia with her master go trick or treating, a splendid time considering this is Amelia’s first time outside, as they stroll down the street this big mansion is spotted in the distance and consumed by curiosity, they venture in the mansion only to stumble onto a party occurring and thus the adventure begins with Amelia after her master disappears and the search begins through the unusual hallways and creepy rooms within the mansion’s walls. With good or bad decisions, the end to the big mystery is yet to be unraveled.

Gameplay:

Coming from a popular genre at its time, ‘’Trick & Treat’’ is your casual, RPG, Halloween themed indie game, embracing the adventure part with some casual puzzles, casual exploration and some casual jumpscares without a combat system while narrowing Death by some chances, all of this just to collect candy for Miss Charlotte’s craving!

Cutting to the basics as the controls is your good old keyboard and the menu is simplistic, so much so that the options are the ‘’F’’ keys, shown in the beginning of the game. Such short plot brings some challenge by the puzzles mentioned above, some riddles to exercise both the young and old mind, quick time events and interaction between objects and characters although deadly tricks awaits, also called ‘’Dead Ends’’ is a metaphor for ‘’Game over’’, so try not dying too many times…

An RPG game’s visuals always starts with an empty canvas and an idea. Made by the engine RPG Maker VX Ace, its visuals provides a somewhat spooky environment with a variety of dark tones of colour for the player’s surroundings, as for the themes, some is smoothly calm while the rest highlight the said spooky environment, however the themes won’t play in certain places during the playthrough. The artwork, mainly in some cutscenes and jumpscares, appears to be like a minimalistic painting in aquarelle while the character style that appears in both the chatbox and the credits is sorta cartoonish.

It became common for almost every game in Steam to have achievements, this one is no surprise and short game, comes with few achievements, all of them offers no difficulty since you’ll get them by two playthroughs I think… One thing to keep in mind, there is hidden content unlockable by playing the game and completing one of its four endings, it’s not much though it’s something.

Glitches/Bugs/Errors Report:

For starters, there isn’t any game breaking error, but there is however some rather small bugs, for example, if you run against the bathroom door, which is in first floor to the left in the beginning, during the pursuit against the ‘’dancing shoes’’, you’ll continuously play the sound effect at a faster rate and getting close to a particular window near the red throne, in the beginning again, will trigger a jumpscare but keep pressing the ‘’up’’ arrow key and it will become a loop. I am not sure if this are unintentional or not, only noticed these during the gameplay.

Overall

Sincerely, I was never interested in this genre when it became popular in the 2010’s, except some games that appeared here and there, not even Final Fantasy caught my attention, I was more of an ‘’action’’ player than anything else… Playing ‘’Tanki Online’’ while blasting the rock band ‘’AC/DC’’ in the morning was fire back in the day, literally. I can guarantee that I was interested in this game when I first started my Steam account and, of course, it is the first I played in Steam, an enjoyable experience is what I recall a year ago but what about now?

I don’t have much to complain about the controls and system besides the ‘’options menu’’, as I mentioned above, it is triggered by the ‘’F’’ keys and the instructions to access with each key is only shown at the beginning of the game, you will get used to it after being slightly annoyed, eventually and similarly, that hint about items, after interacting with John, could be helpful at the beginning since I missed him at the start. About the puzzles, I enjoyed them, they are relatively easy, my favorite being the guillotine in the dungeons where you have to pick who’s the murderer and the ‘’solving time’’ puzzle in the game room, made me remember of Lewis Carroll’s poem ‘’The Two Clocks’’, not sure if it’s based of that, but a neat thing nonetheless though some are plain simple, in the red room to get to the red doll you have to pass by some toy guards, problem is you only have one way there and no effort is needed to bypass them. Lastly, ‘’Dead Ends’’, just because it is not part of completion of the game it does not mean you can’t trigger them, it is cool to watch the different ways to perish there but I wished for some more honestly, I saw some good opportunities in some instances.

Graphics? Well, for an RPGmaker game, it is good and the same goes for its visuals, a cute layer to cover the horror aspect for a light spooky experience and this includes both the jumpscares, by only showing a quick frame of an image without filter and sound effect, and themes, by either ease the player or to lighten up the environment. Most of the characters are pleasant, really likable, you can read their lore after reaching one of the endings although I was expecting a bit more of interaction during the playthrough with the variety of characters in there, it was interesting to say at least.

Would I recommend it? Absolutely, I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in trying this genre for the first time, it’s neither on the same level as ‘’Ib’’ nor as ‘’The Crooked man’’ but sure is a lovely, short, Halloween themed game for anyone to experience, besides the fact I wanted a bit more usage with the flashlight besides just in the dungeons and finding some hidden objects and more interaction with the characters could give the game a bit more life as well with the puzzles, a little difficulty never hurt nobody.

Score: 7/10
