Good port, INCREDIBLY BAD GAME

It's just soo ass man
I thought that maybe people are overacting and maybe it wont look that bad in action
IT LOOKS WORSE THAN IN THE SCREENSHOTS.
everything about this game is absolute puke.

And it's just so crazy how big of a step back this is from the second game.
The second game had really pretty backgrounds and good art direction with enemies that made sense it also had dialogue that was really charming and funny and the ending cutscene were also really fun. Not to mention the levels were so well paced and thought out same with the charge mechanic that that game has.

This game has none of that
it's like an anti sequel
it's sooooo dumb
And I especially hate this canon attack gimmick they have cause it just causes constant noise
and ♥♥♥♥ I can't get over the freaking flying trees on the second level, what were those doing there?????
Also why are the levels so long and drawn out?
It's not hard to see how this company went bankrupt after this game. It's a shame.

But yeah literally just go play the second game instead its soooo peak
Also thank you City Connection for porting these games I appreciate it, I love it when games are preserved and translated even when they are bad

Awesome awesome awesome !!!!

Sengoku Blade/Tengai/Samurai Aces: Tengai or whatever the heck you want to call it is a pretty fun arcade smup from Psikyo, a company known for its influential bullet hell games from back in the day like Gunbird 2 or the first Samurai Aces game.

Ofc this game has seen many ports this being the third one (I think) which might make you wonder if it's even worth buying but tbh this is the most accessible the game has ever been:
-You can set the difficulty
-Decide how many continues you want
-It has the secret character
-and on top of that it's in English

The only other port that comes close is the Saturn version since it also has the difficulty select option and on top of that it has animated portraits, voice acting and a crossover character: Marion from Gunbird. But..... it's Japanese only.
Which I mean sure if you just want to play the game it has the edge over the steam one but the game has pretty hilarious dialogue writing. From classic quotes like "Tengai does it again!" to "Socrates wants more cigarettes" and just in general some endings can either be pretty sweet or pretty cool like Katana's good ending or Koyori's good ending or Tengai and Ayin's co-op ending.

But then again Ig you have youtube for that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Either way if you are interested you could def get it for super cheap on a sale like I did
or just try it out first on fightcade 2 or on another emulator to see how you like it and then make your choice

But I def think this is the best way to experience the game
and I had a lot of fun :)
(I swear I'll 1cc it eventually)

DO YOU NEED TO BE A TOUHOU FAN TO ENJOY THIS?
NO

I personally went into this game with no knowledge on Touhou and mainly wanted to try it out since I really like SMT games and honestly for me this might have been the perfect entry point to the series. Since every time I cleared a dungeon or got some new characters I always ended up looking up who they were if they really stuck out to me and by the end of the game I was familiar with the entire franchise and even finished some of the easier main line games.

But with that said I mentioned SMT,
if you are only into Touhou but not SMT is it worth it?
Maybe?
Dungeon crawler rpgs can be real time consuming and it tends to be a genre more for masochists but if you are interested in the genre I could see it as a good entry point to these kinds of games.

Why?
The game basically takes the most fun and memorable aspects of classic SMT games and basically makes them a lot more accessible. There are a bunch of ways to customize your experience with the game through quality of life upgrades or with fun and challenging modifiers that can make the game harder/easier/make a play-through stand out even more etc.

I'm going to be honest at first these features seemed really broken but thankfully the game is designed around them and most of them are really just fun modifiers if you want a different play-through than last time.
Which is really neat !!!

But anyway how was the actual game game
You play as Sumireko, a high-schooler living in our world with psychic abilities who can visit Gensokyo in her dreams because of her powers (yeah its like astral projecting and stuff, really funny honestly) and her plans for the summer are basically to spend most of her summer break in Gensokyo but virtual copies of the locals start appearing and since only Sumireko can control these clones (since she's the only one with a smart phone) it falls onto her to stop this incident.

That's for the synopsis but what about the gameplay, as mentioned it's your classic dungeon crawler action. Things start out relatively easy but as you progress in the game thing can get pretty brutal. I mean no joke this is a game where you visit FOUR DIFFERENT HELLS each of them more brutal than the other and it can get pretty ridiculus but man I just love it so much.

For gameplay mechanics you have your classics like demon negotiations sleeper hijacking (you know like Touhou hijacks lol), elemental weaknesses and something that's completely new: the SP Meter.
Basically the way it works is that as when you land a crit or an effective move the meter goes up and there are some pretty useful things you can spend your meter on for example buffing through your phone, spellcard attacks, turn prevention, avoiding encounters, healing etc.
It's really versatile and it can save you a lot of different resources if you learn how to use it right

Overal
It was a really fun game and has to be the best game of the decade for me. I might be biased since I love these sort of games but man. It's an absolute blast and honestly I'm suprised it goes for so cheap on steam.
Definitely check it out if you are fan of Classic SMT games or if you are interested in the genre.

TIPS
Some tips before I wrap this up
- Make sure to talk to Nitori and fill out your sleeper database
- Keep Hijacking if you want more money since you can either get really expensive items or a lot of money up front if you keep doing it.
- USE MEMORY BALLS.
- There's a google spreadsheet that you can find online that literaly has every info on the game ever
- Dungeons are designed in a way that you never need to grind. Just be smart and tactical with your resources

Some side notes since I just can't shut up about this game
-The ost absolutely slaps
-I love how through the sacrifice and skill transfer system you can keep using your favs even through the end of the game. I had Byakuren for example helping me from the moment I got her.
- all the touhous are here INCLUDING PC-98 AND THE ALBUMS (IM NOT KIDDING)
- The game does a really good job making the end game and the final encounters truely feel outworldy and threatening. Like man when "Battle D" started playing in that tunnel on my first encounter i literaly shat my pants. It was like a jumpscare and I almost died too. This game's brutal ;_;
- THE GAME IS STILL GETTING UPDATED AND THERE WILL BE A WORKSHOP SOON ????????
I LOVE IT
