Fallout: New Vegas is one of my favorite RPGs of all time. It follows the same "Skyrim with Guns" approach that Fallout 3 takes but in my opinion has a better storyline, with "true" ironsights and better general gameplay. Some people appreciate the grimdark devastated atmosphere of Fallout 3 over the more hopeful, western approach of Fallout New Vegas, and I can understand that. It feels weird in a post-nuclear war to have such thriving societies built in the rubble, but I enjoyed the charm and innovative ways that society has managed to survive. In addition to this, during any kind of nuclear conflict they enemy would send millions of nukes at Washington D.C., where Fallout 3 is located so it makes a bit of canonical sense to have Fallout 3 be way more decimated than the Mojave Desert. I'm a bit too young to have played the earlier Fallouts but from everything I've read New Vegas is a more direct succesor to the older games.

Fallout New Vegas has a faction system in lieu of a more traditional blanket morality system, which I find fantastic considering how the various storylines of the game can play out. It doesn't make sense that EVERYONE would be mad if you decided to shoot that innocent wastelander in the face, but if that wastelander happened to belong to a particular faction, they would be unhappy with you. This lets you reliably play as an "evil" or "good" character without the pre-conceived shackles of either disposition. If you manage to upset any faction too much be sure to expect them to send "hit squads" after you that can show up at any time, adding a real danger to exploration. The map also is a lot more packed with interesting locations, and the open nature of the environment means you can stumble across all kinds of mutated horrors that wayyyy outlevel you at any time. Really amazingly terrifying stuff. The S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system is still in place, as well as the perk system. I've found speech to be a bit OP, but I really enjoyed talking my way out of dire situations time and time again.

Seriously, if you haven't had the chance to play this game yet, buy the ultimate edition now. The DLCs are all great fun and on PC, you can mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of this game. I recommend Project Nevada for beginners, it adds a sprint functionality and rebalances all the weapons and perks to be more challenging, but also more enjoyable. Walking across a desolate desert littered with the remnants of the old world, hearing rifle shots as your companion Boone murders anything hostile that comes within a mile of you while listening to the "Big Iron" by Marty Robbins on the radio, you too will come to realize the elegant brilliance of this RPG. If anything, play it to get a handle on the lore of the Fallout universe and prepare yourself for Fallout 4!
