Early Access Review
You start playing any game and you have no items. To craft a pickaxe you need 3 stones so you run around and collect some stones lying on the ground. Later you can build a castle, but that requires 5000 stones and yet you still run around picking individual stones from the ground. This becomes a tedious, boring, repetitive task and you stop playing the game long before even building that castle.

Majority of the games suffer from this problem. But not Factorio. Factorio is a game that solves this problem perfectly. You start by mining ore by hand. Then you craft a burner drill so you only supply it with coal and collect the ore. Then you build a conveyor belt so that you can collect all the ore mined by multiple drills from a single place. Then you replace the burner drills with electric drills so that you don't have to manually resupply them with coal. Then you replace the belts with automated flying robots that just move the mined ore for you. And then you even stop building the drills yourself, you just order your robots to build them for you.

In Factorio, you are constantly going bigger, faster, more efficient and you almost never do the same task twice.

I have spent thousands of hours in Factorio, also long before it was even released on Steam. If you asked me a few years ago, without hesitation I would have answered that it is the best game released in this century.

Therefore, it was with a heavy heart when I was changing my review to negative.

I think that Wube Software LTD is a classic example of a company that became too successful, too quickly. As a result, they don't listen to the players any more.

Some issues, raised hundreds of times, remain unresolved for years. They will openly respond “I don't understand why it bothers people, that's not how I use it”.

Over the past three years, since I actually recommended the game, I have seen a number of useful features removed. Features that have been used by tens of thousands of players, who are still searching for how to restore them with mods, that unfortunately the modding API doesn't allow. Only because one day Wube decided “it's not a feature, it's a bug, let's remove it”.

A large number of issues being raised nowadays is getting trashed with responses like “we didn't think about this use case, therefore it's not a bug”, “it works as intended, even though it is extremely annoying” or “we don't want to pollute our codebase with a fix for that”. Yes, I am serious.

Features that were being requested by the players and were “planned” a while ago, never got implemented and suddenly became “no intention to change it” issues. Any attempt of a conversation with the developers is impossible – comments on the trashed reports are ignored, while if you report the same issue again it will get trashed as a duplicate.

It really makes me sad, but the team behind Factorio is now 20 developers, who think that they are the only ones playing this game and who think that they make you a favour by allowing you to buy it.
