In war, not everyone is a soldier. This War of Mine shows you the horrors of war through the eyes of a group of civilians. Taking quite an influence from the Siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian War, you are put into a city under siege and forced to survive. Though the gameplay is nothing special, what truly shines about This War of Mine is the message behind it. Survival is tough in this city, and you must do whatever you can to survive. This leads to you quite often making terrible choices to survive, such as robbing a hospital or a church just trying to help innocent people like you survive and stealing from an elderly couple, and if you come back to where the couple was, you find out that they have starved to death because of you. Ultimately, This War of Mine is more of a work of art than a game. It excels at showing you the savagery of war through the ones most affected by it, but the raw gameplay is honestly not the most fun or enjoyable, at least during the daytime. At night, however, comes the real fun of the game. You must send one of your playable characters to a location in the world to scavenge for food, medicine, and anything else that your group needs to survive. If you're a roleplayer, you'll be delighted to know about the character creator where you can upload a picture and create a description for your own custom character. But if you want to stick to the base game, it can get a little boring. There isn't much replay value, and once you've seen a location you've seen it all. If you're looking for a gritty Call of Duty style shooter, look elsewhere. But if you're looking for a fascinating tale of how life under siege affects innocent civilians, this is for you. I don't believe that the current price tag is worth it for such a short experience, but if you can get the game on sale, it's definitely worth it.
