I was very excited for this game, but it never really panned out.

It's pretty, and it's full-featured in a way that a lot of similar games aren't...

On the other hand, it has no soul. It was supposed to be a space exploration game, or at least capture some of the mystique of space travel. Space exploration in Starbound is boring, and motivated by a need for different materials.

The core gameplay never felt like it made sense. I'm forced to compare it to one of its contemporaries: Terraria. Terraria was simple, but offered enough complexity that made people play for hour upon hour. Starbound, on the other hand, was too complex to pick up and play without some commitment, and it never felt fun. I stayed through a handful of combat upgrades before I just gave up.

It's a well-made game, and Chucklefish can be proud of what they made. Unless you already love this type of game, though, this isn't going to be the one to draw you in.

Early Access Review
I love the core gameplay, I love how ambitious of a program it is, and I love messing around in space! The developers have an amazing vision for the future of this game!

However, the new "Planets" update made it more clear than ever that this is not the game it should be. Core gameplay problems from more than a year ago persist. Bugs are rampant. Instead of fixing existing problems and making a playable game, my impression is that the developers would rather add feature after feature.

I can now fight spiders... but I can't place a block above my head.

I would love to recommend this game, but I can't.

Glitchy nearly to the point of unplayability.

The "difficulty" is laughable.

The story is kind of silly.

Not really much draw to play this game.

Despite the low-bit graphics, it's a beautiful adventure through a cohesive, imaginary world held together by an extremely engaging score.
