Entropy : Zero 2 is honest-to-god, the best HL2 mod I've ever played, across the board, and it's absolutely free. Featuring an 8-10 hour long campaign, an interesting story that successfully bridges the gap between Half-Life and Portal, and post-game challenge modes and bonus maps, it provides a solid, polished experience that'll keep you occupied for quite some time.

The mod features a revamped combat system, with faster weapon switching allowing you to keep a constant damage output, and enabling weapon combos. The damage of all weapons is increased, for both you and the enemies, so everyone's a glass cannon. Several new weapons also make an appearance, including a burst-fire MP5K, a pulse pistol with a charged shot, the S.L.A.Ms from Half-Life 2: Deathmatch, and the Xen grenade, which can suck up enemies and objects and spawn Xen lifeforms in return, creating extremely chaotic three-way battles. Half-Life 2's existing weapons have also been given a makeover, with more satisfying sound effects and animations. In addition, you'll also be able to command squads of Combine Soldiers with a revamped squad combat system. All of this comes together to create a fast-paced, exciting combat experience, in which you'll need to act fast, and shoot fast to survive.

The mod's visuals are some of the best I've seen in a HL2 mod. EZ2 almost exclusively takes place in new locations outside of City 17 and the outlands, with graphical fidelity about on-par with Valve's own HL2 maps. From the rain-soaked ruins of Nova Prospekt, to the warm depths of Arbeit, to the ice-cold Arctic wastes, there's plenty of variety here, and it's all very cohesively put together.

All of this is enhanced by the original soundtrack composed for the mod, with a variety of ambient and action-focused tracks with their own distinct style, yet still fitting into the world of Half-Life, and the situations in which they play.

If you're a fan of Half-Life, you owe it to yourself to play this mod.
