TL;DR: The best way to enjoy Scorn is to go into it with ZERO expectations.

Scorn eschews a lot of the things we're familiar with in streamlined video games. Like many, I've been waiting to play this game since it was announced. But, I took care not to look too much at it before release because I wanted to experience the game for what it is, not what I thought it might be. Post-release, I see a lot of buzz online trying to determine what this game is or isn't. At the end of the day, different people are going to enjoy different experiences, depending on what they are looking to get out of said experiences:

If you want to feel powerful, Scorn probably isn't the game for you.
If you want to veg out and numb your brain, Scorn probably isn't the game for you.
If you want a detailed story with focus on characters and dialogue, Scorn probably isn't the game for you.
If you want adrenaline-pumping action, Scorn probably isn't the game for you.
If you want masochistic levels of difficulty, Scorn probably isn't the game for you.

Ebb Software have crafted an exquisitely brutal and alien atmosphere that is rewarding in and of itself. If you're someone like me who enjoyed the environments of Alien and Prometheus a hell of a lot more than their plots, Scorn has much to offer. While the gameplay feels bare-bones and clunky, I am of the opinion that this actually enriches the immersive experience. It's not as if the developers put obstacles in the game that are difficult/impossible to overcome because of the controls. Rather, the minimalist gameplay approach serves to place the player in the protagonist's skin (there are no shoes in Scorn).

Scorn reminds us that video games are another medium for art. There is nothing revolutionary about this game, and that's OK. Through environmental storytelling, aided by grotesquely beautiful visual and audio design, Scorn offers deeply moving philosophical and existential themes that will haunt you long after you've completed the game, which is the ultimate achievement of good Science-Fiction in my opinion. The only bad thing I have to say about this game is that there isn't more of it. Scorn 2 when?

Ideally, I'd actually be able to play the game before I leave a review. However, my (just over) 2.5 hours invested in this game has consisted of several repeated attempts to make it into a multiplayer match, all followed by instant disconnects and subsequent crashes back to the desktop, proceeding to reboot the game, only to be temporarily banned for something that wasn't even my fault. At least Bandai-Namco have the decency to let me practice a game that I may never actually get to play while I sit in timeout.

UPDATE

I've finally figured out why I was having connection issues (read in spoiler), and feel it necessary to edit my review.
It turns out that my ASUS motherboard came with software (GameFirst VI) that Easy Anti-Cheat did NOT like. Hopefully my suffering can help people with similar issues, if anyone still wants to play this game...

Gundam Evolution, at its core, is a really well made 6v6 team-based hero shooter that goes toe-to-toe with Overwatch in terms of gameplay. In fact, I've ditched my friends playing Overwatch on multiple occasions to play Gundam Evolution instead. The pace of play in Gundam is very fast, the action almost never stops. There have been times where I am physically shaking after a match because of how intense things can get. If teams choose to organize and communicate, that chaos only escalates. I LOVE it.

However, the game is not without its flaws, of which there are many. The chief among those flaws is the anemic player-base. The launch of Gundam Evolution was doomed to be eclipsed by the launch Overwatch 2, a far more popular game. Pair that with the very problematic launch Gundam Evolution had, and it seems that interest in this game has nearly gone extinct. On top of that, the Free-to-Play business model does little to incentivize people to continue playing the game when they're getting curb-stomped by characters locked behind a paywall. In fairness to Gundam, it is possible to unlock new characters with in-game currency earned through progression, but unless you purchase the 10 dollar (USD) premium Battle Pass, it might take a person longer than the game's projected life span to do so. This issue is then amplified by many matches ending prematurely because of connection issues or some people just rage-quitting. Pair that with an already dwindling player-base that has created long queue times and it becomes somewhat difficult to progress through the Battle Pass.

Now that I've sunk my teeth into Gundam Evolution, I'm switching my initial 'Not Recommended' review to a 'Would Recommend'. If you are someone who enjoys (or once enjoyed) Overwatch, Gundam Evolution has a lot to offer. It's a Free-to-Play game, so there is absolutely zero harm in at least giving this game a shot!
