Calling this game a retro beat'em up would be quite unfair. Mayhem Brawler was surely inspired by the arcade classics of yore but it's way more than a simple chameleon. There are a lot of modern design elements at work here. All of the combos and diverse status effects could feel like overwhelming at first and perhaps a bit unwelcoming to the new player but once you get past the initial hurdle there's a lot of depth and room for mastery here.

What was more surprising was the well crafted, silver age inspired comic book universe and the story that goes with the game. Combined with the excellent art direction it almost feels like licensed game making me yearn for more games in the Mayhem universe.

And perhaps one day that will happen. We can only hope. Until then Mayhem Brawler is a solid game fans of the genre should certainly try.

One of the best and most original western RPGs ever.
