It’s a shame because the game has a very nice look to it, and the shooting and fighting is actually pretty fun. The problem to me is with the performance and the core gameplay loop.

First of all calling it an “extraction shooter” is a bit rich. You are extracting treasure, sure, but there is no risk to loosing your gear or skills like in other extraction shooters – you lose the treasure, guns are only lootable, and skills you cannot lose. Additionally, you can extract many times during a match so there isn’t much of a risk-reward calculation, which also means there is more fighting; so to each their own.

The gameplay loop revolves around upgrading your skills to higher rarities, which obviously makes them much stronger. For this, you need A LOT of currency. Upgrading to the last 2 rarities is insanely grindy. And that is for just 1 skill, now add 4 more to that, and if you want to have some other ones to switch it up... It is crazy grindy.

Pros
+ Design – visually the game looks great, cool comic book artstyle, colorful detailed world. Obviously lots of love went into making it, props to the design team.
+ Combat – IF performance was not a factor, the fighting itself is actually pretty fun. Shooting, movement, traversal, all feel very solid.

Cons
- Performance – the game just feels sluggish, janky. It feels like players are rubberbanding, like they are glitching around. It is not smooth like Fortnite for example. It kinda feels like I am playing on 40 FPS even though I have 80. Then the actual frame drops to 50 when there is a high enemy density or highly detailed areas. The fighting is very unenjoyable due to this.
- Small playerbase – it is a majority console game but Steam player count does not look promising for long term engagement. It can already take 5+ minutes to find a game, and lobbies can be half full (in off peak hours).
- Subscription – gives you a VERY useful 3rd trinket extraction slot that is also a safe pouch in case of death. The membership also gives you free booster each day, 20% more XP, extra battle pass quests. It is only $4 a month but so scummy that this is in the game, if only for the safe pouch.
- Jumping meta – you will eventually run into sweats that spam jump and melt you with shotguns. Jumping does not consume stamina so you can just bunny hop around in fights, combined with hip fire, combined with aim assist, combined with janky optimization, results in complete brokenness. Jump spamming has been addressed in patch 1.4.1.
- Grindy upgrades – as previously mentioned, getting all your skills fully upgrade takes A LOT of currency.
- No free cosmetics – besides 1 outfit (and some gear skins), there is no other customizable items to be unlocked through free means. Battle pass items are nice though.

Ultimately, the combat is fun, if only the game had a smoother gameplay experience. The gameplay loop of extract to sell to upgrade gets stale quickly. The playerbase is already small and I don’t see how they will attract more long term. Cool concept but most likely short lived.

Hi Rhizzy

Thank you so much for your time playing HAWKED and leaving such a detailed review.

We appreciate your kind words on our stylization and combat. We are glad you liked those elements. We are sorry other elements bought those cool elements down for you. Please know that we are already taking steps to improve the stability across the board for players. We will be striving to bring the most smoothest experience we can. Also we will be keeping an eye on balance in all areas and make adjustments as needed around progression, gun meta, and movement metas. We will keep your feedback in mind in these areas as well when we think about feedback from the community on the best course of action for rebalance.

As for Monetization, this is a complicated topic. We want to make things feel worth it for those that spend money but not go into p2w territory. We want to lean towards convenience but still fair. This is our goal. But we are open to feedback and will make sure to take your points into account about it. Again thank you so very much for taking the time with this review. Feedback is very important and all amounts help us grow to a better game.

Appreciate the dev response. Hopefully the safe pouch gets reconsidered, the spam jumping meta gets addressed, and the performance improved. If things change in the future I am willing to revisit the game and adjust my review. Wish you all the best!
