spooky bonus is the third grey alien match-3 on steam. holiday bonus was iffy, spring bonus much better, and this one tackles another major holiday, good old halloween, as saturated as that topic is.

the title screen says 2015, but the game actually came out in 2013, and while there are some steam features to appease those who play steam instead of the games themselves, there's still no widescreen support. surely by 2013, and especially in 2015, it was widespread enough, yet all we get is some spooky background to cover the black bars on the sides. lazy af.

100 levels unlocked one at a time, as usual, with casual and timed mode to choose from. match a certain amount of something, remove tiles, or bring golden skulls to the bottom are the goals. there's even what passes for a narrative in casual games. the map is scrolled only by moving the cursor to the top or bottom of the screen, which is lame.

fun fact: since it's still the same game reskinned once again, levels are still stored as text files and can be edited to create custom layouts.

there's a house decoration element too, and just like level backgrounds, your home can be set as a wallpaper. not only that, but items unlock and upgrade power-ups. some are created randomly by matching 4+ tokens (and have to be clicked twice or switched to trigger now, which makes for fewer mistakes), others are available anytime but need to be charged. oh, and they finally get rid of tiles and activate each other, which were major oversights in previous games. sadly, lightning doesn't prioritize special tiles, like in some other games, so even fully upgraded it's pretty useless.

the game looks nice (some of the backgrounds are great) and has decent music for the first time, plus separate volume settings, a windowed mode toggle for a non-resizable window, still of 1024x768, custom cursor and a toggle for tips. it's definitely the most enjoyable of grey alien's match-3 catalog, and while pretty generic overall, it's fun to play.
