This is an awesome and inexpensive little wargame. Sure, the UI is a total lift from Civ V, but don't let that fool you. This game is far more simple strategy wargame than it is 4X, hearkening back to the days of the _____ General franchise. If you enjoyed the Civ V combat system, don't like getting bogged down in city micromanagement, and enjoy high fantasy settings, you could do a lot worse than this game. Especially for two sawbucks.

It really is. For the price point, I don't know why this doesn't get more talk. I do think they made a mistake having the various planes be little pocket dimensions, though. Right now, it's just a really expensive sink for little return except on huge huge maps where you need the megaunits in the late game. Part of the reason the alternate plane in MoM was so compelling was because it was an overlay and could be used strategically, not just economically. Still, the Civ V/SSI General combat model is as strongly on display here as anywhere, although extra props to Civ V for having distinct icons for every UNIT rather than every unit family.

In a lot of ways, the tactical combat in this game is better than Civ V, at least in terms of units having interesting abilities with practical uses. The pushback and anti-pushback features are just two that come to mind. (That GNK adopted in Special Units.)
