It feels like the sequel to Dragon Age Origins I've been wanting for 14 years.

Less in "gameplay", (other than "vaguely 3rd person isometric" it's not super similar)

But the scope, material and content feels close.

Like Mass Effect was the first real RPG that had any sort of real romance mechanic or special cutscenes for it (okay there was sort of a mild thing in KOTOR 1&2 but not to that level) and they expanded that with DAO, however it was limited and even after the Witcher sort of blew the doors off that, even DAI and MEAs are pretty tame, especially because they said that certain DAO races make it extra weird.

Meanwhile in BG3 you have so many things going on character wise. Like yes there's the massive romance options but additionally there's a million different rogue/warrior/dwarf etc options that don't even require a roll that's just background and character building.

That's the stuff that feels like the biggest expansion to me just oceans of text on what your character does and interacts to the world, and the gameplay is solid (although like DAO for items it's "bigger number better" and "oh magic thing that triggers once in a blue moon" although with short rests and long rests as the limiting mechanism rather than mana/lyrium.

If that all makes sense.
