The best isometric RPG since Baldur's Gate 2. Unlike Baldur's Gate 2, though, it's strictly turn-based, not RT with a Pause.

The NPCs littering the world are humorous, distinctive and fleshed out. The storyline is somewhat standard, but the sidequests and little set pieces are funny and memorable. There's no real intra-party interaction like there is in Baldur's Gate, but most arguments are resolved with a rock/paper/scissors decision, a rather elegant way to settle arguments between equals.

The spells, their interaction with the environment and the effects produced are all top-notch and handled gracefully, the fights are varied and at points really difficult.

With a ton of money in its warchest and free from any publisher's influence, Larian was finally able to fully realize its vision of a game they wanted to make and it's clearly a labor of love. There's still a half year left, but this is far in the lead for my GOTY of 2014.
