I can easily recommend Hedon as an experience. Having not put time into Doom or Quake in well over 10 years now, I figured I'd pick up Hedon and get stuck in.

What separates this from Doom or Quake and puts it more in line with Half Life is it's slow burn moments. Instead of being absolutely frantic at all times. Hedon will drop you into a scenario where you aren't even fighting for minutes at a time with surprisingly rich atmosphere for a game running in a Doom sourceport engine.

Gameplay is rock solid as you'd expect from a retro themed shooter with such strong DNA, weapons feel heavy with noticeable kickback and sound. There's genuinely nothing better than landing a well placed axe throw and hitting multiple enemies.

I played this game through on Hedonistic I believe, it offers a challenge but nothing like a John Romero death room that's clearly designed to bend the player over a table. There are further modes which drastically change gameplay so if I decide to give it another whirl at some point I will definitely be trying out the melee only mode.

Hedon is an all around solid-to-great experience, especially if you've not had an old school FPS to get your hands on in a while. It feels like a true old school game but still has enough modern design to carry you through the game with ways to overcome long sightlines and pick off targets from afar if needed.

The downsides are relatively few. I felt the last fight of the game was underwhelming, especially considering how intense the main big fight before this one turns out.
Power-ups go from being extremely scarce to surprisingly abundant to the point I was maxed out for the last quarter of the game and ended up just not using them. They're not bad in terms of powerups but they're not like a Quad Damage rampage inducer.
Some enemy types feel less rewarding to beat than others. Looking at you sentry bot things.

If you want a solid shooter or just like the idea of thicc demon girl crushing heads like watermelons between those thighs, then go right ahead and have a blast. Solid recommend.
