To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Doki Doki Literature Club. The visual novel is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of Literary criticsm most of the poems will go over a typical reader's head. There’s also Yuri’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into her characterization- her personal philosophy draws heavily from H.P. Lovecraft literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these writings, to realize that they’re not just intelligent- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Doki Doki Literature Club truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Yuri’s existential character file “yuri.chr,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Inger Wolf’s Under A Black Sky.
