Quick Summary
Trine returns with polished levels and easy puzzles that you can play with your friends. The game is the most simplified of them all, even though I prefer my games to be challenging, I let it slide because these games are always fun despite any complaints below. The game is a treat both solo and co-op. It’s more Trine and that’s never a bad thing.

More in depth:
  • I’ve played the other 3 trine games all CO-OP and never bothered solo, mainly because I never thought or needed to. I actually played SOLO for first time, since two separate groups of friends, our time to play didn’t match up, and one group was the one I’ve played the other 3 with, so I know it wasn’t because the game is bad, the other I don’t know, man it gets harder to play games with friends as you get older.

  • You get the return of I think most of the old ABILITIES that is standard trine like rope connection puzzles, swinging with them. Wizard has conjuring objects for platforming and blocking; the knight has beam manipulation and is mainly the combat character and least puzzle mechanics for him. The new additions are for sure, floating ropes, conjuring a ball, and up to three in late, and then magnetism for the knight on his shield. I also don’t exactly know if this is 100% correct on what is new, but either way all this is in the game.

  • The STORY is skippable and I do have to say that the game looks good, but the CUTSCENES show that this engine can’t do up close faces and needs to stay at a distance to not show its lack of polish. I also never played these games for the story, so I never care to pay attention and always skip.

  • The GAME SERIES started out harder and each entry has gotten easy, for the platforming/puzzles Trine 1 & 2 had respawns only at checkpoints and more deadly traps, Trine 3 had respawns at last safe place before death that someone had to stand on top of. Here you spawn back instantly at someone’s feet, which can teleport your friends past a puzzle if your already ahead of them. Each with pros and cons for what skill the players are, I prefer the harder penalty, but since people I play with suck, it frustrates them less and I’d rather them have a good time than rage.

  • Most PUZZLE MECHANICS return from previous with new ones like electricity that metal can be used as a conductor for multiple purposes which was really creative, and the levitating ropes was a surprise, it is simplified at what you can shoot ropes at when compared to Trine 2 which was anything wood and less rigid, and spawn conjured objects where you draw, but now it’s above you and by just pressing a button, and can still draw if you care, but that was more of gimmick, so these changes seem more to streamline than dumb down. You can also make the puzzles easier by tweaking settings that I would say ruin the Trine experience, but is a nice option for those that truly struggle.

  • The COMBAT is still the weakest part, and the wizard is for the most part the lamest, except now projectiles from one enemy, you can grab them and throw them back. The knight is the main damage guy and is just spam till thing is dead mostly. The archer complaint is platforms block every arrow and can get frustrating getting an angle with so many and while dodging enemies, but her combo of freezing then the knight can come and do massive damage was fun. It does have more complexity with some enemies being weak or immune to certain attacks, and having more variety when compared to the other entries

  • It had three BOSSES tied to each character, each unique and required the abilities of each with varying degree of fun, but overall better than the old pure combat focused bosses that the other games had, which the final boss is and is the worst because of this, it doesn’t hold to the strengths of the game, like the three I liked did.
