An excellent mature streamlined Strategy RPG built for PC. It's a great game but it's very different from other SRPGs so it's difficult to compare to anything else. The game is challenging and even from the first map you may find yourself dying multiple times but the game rewards persistence and careful planning.

Early on the mechanics of the game may seem too simplistic as you really only seem to have control over unit placement, and whether to attack or defend. This however is just a primer for the very easy to learn interface where your actions are dictated by your skills and equipment. So if you have a high ward skill then defend also heals, if you have a bow or magical item equipped, then attack also allows ranged attacks. It may seem crude but in place of a huge amount of menus for different skills, you have context sensitive input based around mouse clicks. It fits very well with a PC though and is designed for that interface.

Graphics in the game are on the simple side, they are nicely drawn but lack true animation (animation in this game is static sprites given a wobble effect). You may notice early on in the character creation the game tends to have a strong ♥♥♥♥-erotic feel to it as it has 3 times as many sprite options for male characters than female, but throughout the game this feels a bit more balanced. There is a lot of female and male characters to find and recruit, and you can recruit a huge variety of monsters as well!

Going into the character creation it's very detailed, letting you have a lot of control over what your sprite looks like by layering different elements of clothing on them, you then can choose their skills by assigning 10 points to different areas to make them more of a fighter, mage, archer, worker, or any variant hybrid you choose. Lastly you also choose what crime they have been charged with and whether or not you plead guilty or innocent. This actually affects your in-game alignment as well as starting stats, and who comes to rescue you in the start. Another great feature is you can create character templates as well that let you put your custom characters into the game as recruitable NPCs!

The game opens a bit slowly, early on you are focused heavily on escaping prison and getting yourself together but it's not too long before you get a small band together and claim a defensible location as your base. The game generally lacks safe harbors and you should go into most locations with the expectation of combat, but once you claim a base you can set it up to have merchants and other servicemen come visit you, if you have spare beds. You choose a trade-off between hiring additional people or having more servicemen to choose from, but as you go along you continually upgrade to bigger strongholds provided you have the manpower to support them. This creates your own safe haven you can return to to sell and improve items, buy new equipment, and talk to your band members who you can develop stronger bonds with which can give you additional perks.

The game map is huge with hundreds of points of interest to visit and fight your way through, and after some time you can even revisit old maps and fight through them again if you need additional experience.

My only real complaint with the game is it has a lot of randomness in performing certain skills where it will open a mini-game of sorts where you click on random buttons. This is most evident if a party member falls in battle as you are given a chance to revive them after each successful map, there are 12 buttons to click and only 2 of them will result in a revive. With each failure though you are at least given one extra attempt after each map until eventually the odds are more in your favor than against you, it is still random though. You also can re-try skill based attempts if you fail but each failure costs health.

I do recommend this game to anyone who likes mature strategy RPGs and enjoys gritty dark fantasy worlds. It can be a lot of fun and I feel it ultimately rewards the patience and effort you put into it!
