Just play smash, this final release is ♥♥♥♥ af. Bad balancing, no attack decay (which was a brilliant idea), no free characters in practice mode, swarmed with microtransactions, unpolished modes with day one patches, cobbled together story mode, bad in game bustups, repetition of assets as unlockable skins, and no discernible change in another 1.5 years of development post beta. Wtf were they smoking when they made this? The game was in a better state 18 months ago then it is today. I would like the game a lot more if they literally just rolled back to the beta (still on steam's servers btw) and then polished it up a bit and released that as final. This is literally just sloppy seconds. If you want to be a long standing competitor to the sub-genre standard (Smash Ultimate), then you have to at least ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ try.

TLDR: Game is actually ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up, balancing is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, Jason is ♥♥♥♥♥♥, just play smash.

Persona 3 Reload : FES. Anyone who's saying that "They should sell Episode Aigis separately", really doesn't see that this is literally just a pre-order for Episode Aigis/The Answer, with a few bonuses along the way. The expansion pass is the answer, the other "waves" are just supplements before the September release date. It's still scummy, seeing how the files for Wave 1 at least were in the files for the base game at launch, but hey, I'm an idiot, and I love this game and can't wait to play Episode Aigis with all the Reload tweaks and fixes. It's ♥♥♥♥ now, but will be worth the money come september.

My actual favourite game. This game discards the previous mantra of "Persona 3 best story; Persona 4 best characters; Persona 5 best gameplay" to replace all 3 characteristics with this singular game, Persona 3 Reload. The game simply does all factors of the Persona series the best. This game truly realises the intent of Hashino in 2006, truly allowing the game to blossom and flourish beyond the primitive PS2 hardware. Every environment has been created with a resounding love and care, empowered by beautiful models and ray tracing.

90% of the songs in this new release I would say completely eclipse the originals, whereas some others have strange changes that overall make for a weaker song, although this is never at the fault of the singer, Azumi Takahashi. Lotus Juice returns from the original 2006 release, and I am ever so happy to say that he brings a great performance in his vocals, akin to or better than the original songs. Every song in the game has been completely re-recorded for this release, amongst new songs such as 'It's Going Down Now' or 'Colo(u)r Your Night'. The new battle theme, 'It's Going Down Now' conforms to the new battle theme standard of a quieter bridge before the final chorus, of which the song performs naturally and beautifully so. I never bored of the song, unlike 'Last Surprise' which began to become a bit repetitive towards the end of Persona 5.

Each character has been fully realised by voice acting across the vast majority of the game, giving characters new depth in Social Links and so forth. The new Linked Episodes provide a deeper insight into the world of the male party members, who previously did not contain a form of Social Link bar on the FeMC side of Persona 3 Portable. The self-contained stories show Atlus' ability to innovate on existing characters, a trait that hopefully progresses to Persona 6 or a potential Persona 4 Remake (Of which would not be necessary, but nice nonetheless). S.E.E.S has been strongly developed as a group of people who truly feel intertwined, which is elevated by the environments of this world, Iwatodai truly feels alive and breathing (bar Club Escapade), providing a greater sense of world-building amongst the 60+ hours you will be spending here.

Battle has been almost completely renovated, for the absolute best, if not pushing on a tad easy. I played through The Journey on Normal, and intend to continue in The Answer (Episode Aigis) in the same way. Shift brings both the benefit of Baton Pass, while still ensuring that there is a disadvantage in the form of the lack of buffs as was seen in Persona 5 via Confidants. The Theurgy, which acts as a portable ‘Showtime’ from Persona 5 Royal, is what breaks the balancing. It could work brilliantly if tuned down a slight bit. It is simply far too powerful comparatively to how easy it is to obtain. This makes it easy to abuse and negates most of the challenge across most of the playtime.

My gripes with this release are few and far between. While they may prevent Persona 3 Reload from being the absolute best it may be, they do not act in a way that significantly impacted my enjoyment of the game. The general lack of Anime cutscenes in exchange for Pre-rendered scenes was a bit disappointing. The awakening scene was more triumphant than the original, however pales in visual style to the original FMV. Another general issue I had was the full removal of the tiredness system. The lack of this system removed the risk of returning to Tartarus consistently, removing some of the risk of doing so, Lo this did not affect me as I strode to take monthly visits to Tartarus in which I completed floors up until the next Border Floor. My final “complaint” so to speak would be the lighting in the dorm. I understand that this is a commonly reiterated issue, yet an issue nonetheless. The lighting does not conform to any sense whatsoever, and somehow illuminates the protagonist’s hair to a grey shade when under direct light.

On another topic, the prior releases of Persona 3 should be mentioned. The game has been stated to be a remake of the original 2006 release of Persona 3 on PS2, however, I believe this to be false. If anything, this release is most comparable to the Male side of Persona 3 Portable, and the additions from that game as well as Persona 3 FES’ ‘The Journey’. As of current, this game should not be seen as a replacement for any version of Persona 3. The changes in this release should be hearkened to a remake akin to the recent Resident Evil games. Each updates the game in such a way that provides a new presentation, containing the same principles, while still standing on its own two feet and not replacing the original. This is what Persona 3 Reload does. It does not remove any point in seeking to play any alternative version of Persona 3, and likely never will. The upcoming Episode Aigis will most probably place this release in a similar place to that of Persona 3 FES, making that release the easiest point of comparison.

In closing, this game is absolutely wonderful. It is most definitely the definitive edition of Persona 3, and the version I would redirect people to play. The nuance and themes in the story are oh-so-beautiful and preserved brilliantly. This game realises the core goals of the story of Persona 3 in the best way yet, in a form that is the most accessible to people today, unrestricted by graphics, language or platform. If I can add any final note, it is to please play Persona 3 Reload.

10/10 game.
