A decent free taste of a janky indie Souls-like, but the jank has a bit of charm to it.

Back when this demo released I tried it for about 20 minutes before giving up due to how rough it was. It didn't feel good, it barely introduced you to mechanics before enemies were charging at you, and it was very buggy.

I decided to give the demo another shot before jumping into the full game now that that's out, and this seems much better now. I didn't experience any bugs, combat felt fine with keyboard/mouse (kind of a rarity for Souls-likes), and the new intro/tutorial has much better pacing. Devs did a good job updating the demo, which was a bit unexpected.

From what I understand, the demo is just a large area from the main game, but dressed up a bit so it fits with the story of this taking place 50 years after the main Hellpoint. You get quite a bit of content in this demo. I think I found almost every secret and defeated the boss in slightly under 3 hours. There were a few black hole-related encounters that I think I missed, however, and I probably missed a handful of secrets. I did find the room filled with developer messages, however!

The combat is.. interesting. It's a bit light-feeling, but I was getting a Bloodborne vibe from how fast you swing and that you leech energy from hitting enemies, kind of like the life steal mechanic in Bloodborne. However energy is used as ammunition, basically. The railgun and other weapons that "fire" use it. I really enjoyed the Railgun, it didn't feel too OP, but it was strong enough that I would often use it over risking getting in close to melee. I appreciated that energy wasn't a rare resource.

As I mentioned, there are secrets in this. A lot of them. Enough to put some Metroidvania games to shame. I loved how huge the map was in this demo. I kept thinking I was nearing the end, then I'd find a whole new area with multiple branching paths that would lead back into previous areas. I'm looking forward to seeing how big the areas will get in the full game, a few screenshots I've seen lead me to believe they're massive.

Anyway, yes, it's a janky indie Souls-like, but an enjoyable one. I've seen someone refer to Hellpoint as the "EYE: Divine Cybermancy of Souls-likes" and I think that fits pretty well. It's not perfect at what it tries to do, but it has quite a bit of depth, and an enjoyable/charming amount of jank. If you can handle the jank, if you love exploration and finding secrets everywhere, then it's worth checking out the demo.
