Exploring, finding clues, and solving puzzles in a relaxing atmosphere where every detail could hide a mystery: this is what the game does best. The ambience is excellent, and the puzzles themselves are very engaging.

Unfortunately, the roguelike gameplay completely drags the experience down. Too many runs feel pointless, wasting half an hour because of bad RNG, missing resources, or being rewarded with only another small piece of a puzzle.

After finally reaching room 46, which was an absolute nightmare, I already had enough information to solve many other puzzles. The problem was not figuring them out, but having to repeat several more runs just to be able to complete them. Permanent upgrades are simply not enough to counterbalance the RNG.

Revisiting the same rooms over and over again quickly becomes boring. The game artificially extends its length by forcing repetitive roguelike runs between every meaningful step. In reality, the game is quite short, but most of the playtime comes from repeating the same gameplay loop rather than discovering new content.

This creates a frustrating experience that overshadows the true beauty of the game, which is why I would not recommend it to players who enjoy puzzle games unless repetition and roguelike gameplay do not bother them.

I almost uninstalled when I thought it was getting nowhere, but then I give it a second shot and was not disappointed.
There are so many layers, secrets and hidden gems to discover in this game. At some point you'll feel like you've reached madness, until you make another amazing discovery. This game is incredibly well designed, and is worth the time. I'd recommend it if you like puzzle/exploration type games like Fez, Tunic or Animal Well.

If you plan on playing this game, I would recommend to buy it when it's on sale. The game's not worth the price.
It's a shame that a game with such a great potential is ruined by many issues that create a bad gaming experience :
- Main gameplay (controlling animals) poorly developed. What made me buy the game is this mechanic, yet so simple, but with an incredible potential. But it's a failure in Lost Ember. Too often, controls in this game are a bad feeling. When I'm playing a bison, I want to feel the ability to charge and destroy, but here I'm not even sprinting. When I'm playing a bird, I want to feel like a bird, not like an airplane while spamming "Flap".
- Terrible controls and camera. So many times during the game the camera glitches and is stuck in the environment. Overall controls is just bad (e.g. hummingbird controls are like ice skating).
- Story is just dull. The game duration is already extended by so many long cut scenes, and the scenario doesn't even have interesting development or twist.
- Art direction is excellent, but the more I played the game, the more I felt it rushed. After chapter 5 the environment went more and more simple, unpolished (don't look behind you after you turned into an eagle).
- For the original price (not that I bought it on sale) the game is very short. And adding treasures and mushrooms to collect is a pale attempt to add more game time, especially since mushrooms have nothing to do with the gameplay nor the story.

Just try it :D
