This game is Terraria with more random.

Having played Terraria and beaten the 7 bosses, though I'm not sure how many there are at the time of this review, it is a fun game with potential for limitless hours of fun. However the problems Terraria has Starbound solves. What do you do in Terraria when you've mined what you want and done all there is to really do? You regenerate a new world and start the arduous process of moving all your favorite things from one world to the new one. What do you do in Starbound? Feed your ship some trees and fly to a new planet. What will you find when you get there? The scanner tells you the threat level and biome of the planet and the size of the planet determines how large the level is but besides that you don't know what enemies you will face. The creatures have randomly spawning heads, body, tail, abilities, and evolutions, in that as you go further down you will encounter slightly larger and different creatures resembling those on the surface. There are bosses which are also generated rather than predetermined, such as the Eye of Cthulu. The creatures are not all hostile either, besides the bunnies, birds, and npcs' everything else in Terraria will try to kill you. In Starbound you may encounter creatures that attack on proximity, but there are also those that don't attack unless attacked. There are settlements both good and bad that the player can encounter and some in the middle in that they want to attack you and are just waiting for you to give them a reason.

In playing Starbound I have encountered a lot that I liked and few that I did not. The game has a bit of a harsh difficulty at first and to date there is no way to increase your maximum health, so your best and only option is to increase your armor from copper to iron and so on. Of the things I've liked I'd have to say my favorite has been in NPC Interactions and settlements. I chose to play as an Avian, because why play a human when we do that already, and I encountered three different Avians settlements so far. One was a tribe of Egyptian-esc Avians who worship a god named Kleox and attack on sight as you are "unworthy", another was a large town of all Avians on a moon who while they all said only one thing there were several merchants who sold many different things that the player cannot create themselves so they have great use. The guards even warned me that equipping a weapon in the city would end badly and I dared not question that as I wanted to see what the town had to offer. There was even an Avian who once I spoke to admitted their worship of Kleox who the guards quickly dispatched and left me in awe. The third was when I was on a planet and encountered an anchor and a chain leading up. A quick stack of dirt and I found myself on a ship of pirate Avians who constantly reminded me that they were watching me and I better not do anything sketchy, but their Quartermaster was willing to sell me guns and no one attacked me so it all ended well. Avian aside I also encountered an alien prison of Floreans, or flower people, who had many prisoners that when I pressed the control panel at the top of the room they ignored me and attacked the guards and then each other until the last came for me. I also encountered on two separate planets a large medieval castle filled with robotic knights who insisted I not enter but my sword insisted harder that I do. I also encountered a high tech science lab that was populated of a species I can’t recall but claimed that I couldn’t survive having seen their technology and my sword also silenced them. All of this was simply amazing to me. Seeing how the NPCs' interacted with me and each other was a very pleasant surprise from what I expected.

My encounter with planets has also gone very well. There are several planets that all have different colored dirt and while it is pleasant to see something other than brown the different colors don't stack in your inventory but they also stack to a thousand so it makes up for it a bit. Having dug to the bottom of several planets and encountered the magma core at the center of each planet, and I’m hoping to encounter one with a robot factory or some sort for some unexpected fun, I found plenty of some resources but not others which adds to the randomization of the worlds. Not only did I not encounter crystals on the starter planet bu having lost count of the planets I've explored I've only found them on one. I have found platinum and diamonds which instead of staying between depth 4-14 I have found rarely on a few planets and it's almost as if it's a rare resource. As well as the resources being useful the harder they are to find them so gold is useful as more than just a pretty block.

Overall my experience with this game has been great. If i had to give it a 1-10 score I'd give it a 9. It is amazing but there’s some issues which I know the developers are working on and I'm sure a few weeks from now won't even exist anymore. So here's to hoping this game only goes up in popularity, and have fun doing whatever it is that attracted you to Starbound.
