Using the workshop and a local server with sv_consistency "0" can help fix online issues.

Campaign, Mutation, and Realism modes are still enjoyable after 600 hours played, and you have a lot of custom maps to play with friends. However, Versus mode is like any other competitive game, and probably the only way to enjoy it is by playing with friends too...
