Briefly: A Wild Catgirl Appears! is a yuri romance visual novel of little over hour long. Surprisingly, it is entertaining and has its moments.

Sorry NewWestGames. While it is your first on Steam, A Wild Catgirl Appears! isn't a great game. But I wouldn't say it's a bad one either. It was an amusing read and because of that it comes off on the positive side of recommendations.

AWCA! probably appeals well to a certain bunch of people. To the rest it might appear weird (after all it has catgirls[tvtropes.org] in it) but under the surface it is a yuri novel[en.wikipedia.org]: at its heart it is a story about romance between women.

As such one should note that it has some very minor sexual and/or suggestive content in it, like girls kissing and laying naked together. Be assured there are no nipples! (I can't believe I just said that #freethenipple)

What about the story?

Novel follows the life of a high school girl called Ami. She is an awkward and introverted redhead on the second or third year* (novel can't seem to decide) in high school. Secretly she likes girls. She has a hot friend, Ria, and she suddenly has to attend a club where she meets another hot girl, Lise. Then these catgirls appear out of nowhere (you definitely didn't see that coming).

Storyline is rather bizarre. Realistically speaking the couple twists with the catgirls in the halfway don't make any sense at all, but thankfully this is modern fantasy and we can let it slide. In other respects the story is moderate and twists do make it fun nonetheless. There are some video game references that a reasonably acquainted person might appreciate.

There are four other main characters beside Ami the protagonist. Many of the typical character stereotypes are there. There's the crazy and adventurous simpleton. There's the stubborn tomboy. There's the silent nerd and the responsible and outgoing one. And then you get to date them.

Choose your catgirl!

Visual novels usually proceed in the story through choices and so it is here. In this case however it only affects the dialogue immediately after the choice. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have any other effect afterwards in any other part of the story.

Except for the end, of course. Since it's a romance novel, depending on your choices throughout the novel Ami will inevitably wind up dating one of the girls. All four endings are fairly different and I recommend to see them all, as they reveal interesting aspects of the characters.

Overall quality and conclusions

Visually AWCA! looks good. There was only one graphical glitch during my playthroughs (i.e. once candles on a table were getting overdrawn by the woman in the back) and the transitions work well. However, the characters have only a few facial expressions (~5 per character) but more blatantly, their body language never changes (not even when their outfit changes) and therefore never reflects the situation. It's sometimes off-putting.

Also, sometimes the speaker gets mixed up with another. There are also some typos present though not too many.

Soundtrack selection is nice and it works but it's also bland and forgettable to my liking. Peculiarly there's no music in the title screen.

Technically it's missing some common features usual with visual novels. For example you can't scroll the dialogue back, and there are only five save slots (that is impractically low for a completionist).

In the end it still comes off positive, since I found it quite entertaining nevertheless, despite or perhaps because of the silly story. The whole thing is at most 1 ½ hour read-through and I was done after about 2 ½ hours. In that respect the price (3 €) is pretty good, especially if you like visual novels and can't seem to get enough. Perhaps with a 33% sale (i.e. 2 €) the price would be perfect - myself I got it from a bundle though.
