A very simple yet incredibly fun RTS that has many features packed in.

Pros:
  • Simple to learn, difficult to master. The campaign can be hard as nails, but with a bit of effort, you can complete them.
  • The art in this game is fantastic, and each commander has their own character development, morals and personality.
  • While the simplification of controls may frustrate hardcore RTS players, eventually you understand the interesting dynamics they bring to the game. I personally like the emphasis on tactics rather that insane levels of micro managing dexterity and APM needed to be any good at traditional RTS.
  • The sound design is charming and extra care was taken to playing certain sounds when certain events on the battlefield happen. It's a nice touch over the UNIT LOST heard in openRA.
  • The randomly generated maps are really cool, although sometimes unfair. You can choose to play the campaign in random maps or the present ones. I like the addition of seeds for people who may be struggling on a particular level; it does help engage the community.
  • The price is cheap as hell on sale.
  • It supports local play, even in online servers. So bring a buddy around and have some fun.
  • (Also, in my opinion, this game works better on controllers. Crazy right?)

Cons:
  • The simplificatiom of classic mechanics was a little offputting at the start, but is something you learn through a couple hours of play.
  • As I said before, the campaign is difficult and sometimes outright unfair; the map generator can be a friend or an enemy depending on the type of level given. Expect to play through a level 5, 10 or even 20 times to finially complete it.
  • There aren't really a whole lot of people playing this game. I suspect most of the players are from the USA, as there was lots of multiplayer servers at Midnight (UK). (However, the multiplayers games I did find were really fun.)

Conclusion:

This game is awesome, and it really needs more players. So if you read this review and enjoy RTS games, please pick this one up. (Trust me, it's alot more relaxed than other titles, which means you can hop on and enjoy it, even after a long day of work)
Not a fan of RTS or have never tried it? Go for it; it's a nice introduction to the genre and removes the elements that many people dislike them for.

This game has very quickly become one of my favourite games, and it really upsets me that it's not more popular. I hope this review helped and I'll hopefully see you on the battlefield.
