Turbo Kid is an example of a game that does *just* enough, and that is okay. Better than being horrible. Games are often too ambitious for their own good, and by the end of the game, I'm sick of it. Turbo Kid is closer to a standard entry in the genre, with some flaws, but also some really cool things, and it excels for that. Not every game needs to be genre-defining, generational, or upper echelon. It is enough to be competent and fun, and that is where Turbo Kid succeeds.

A small studio, bursting with passion, put out a game I enjoy more than any recent Metroidvania in the last 10 years, besides Metroid Dread. A wonderful little game that doesn't get everything right, but doesn't seem like they were trying to, in a good way. Their decision to be thorough and fully committed to their vision made the game far more satisfying than attempting to check all of the boxes of the genre. The ambience is palpable in each environment. The decor is obvious and subtle, yet remarkable. The bosses are challenging and exotic. It's fluid, it's precise, it's interesting, it's fun, and if you have $20, it's absolutely worth a playthrough.
