I'll be the first to admit, this game? Buggy as all hell. Especially after Act 2. Despite that however, the bones of the game, the core of it, is fantastic. It's literally something I've been dreaming of since I was a teenager. A full CRPG experience in the Warhammer 40K universe, touching on no end of elements of the setting. You've got the Mechanicus, Space Marines, Eldar, Necrons, Gene Stealers, The Inquisiton, the Sisters of Battle, the DARK Eldar, and of course the forces of Chaos. The only major xenos factions it's not touched on (at least so far) are the Tau and the Orks (though there is an Ork skull on your desk in the ship).

It needs fixing up, but I adore this game!

EDIT:

I've since changed my review to positive. After the blowback from the community, CA added a considerable amount more content to this DLC, more justifying it's price point.

Original Review: Negative

The actual content is for the most part fine, if a bit bare bones. The Changeling seems to very much be the focus of the DLC leaving Yaun Bo and Mother Ostankya feeling a bit left out. Mother Ostankya especially suffers from not having a generic Lord added, meaning her 'rouge' Kislev faction is being led by normal Kislivite Boyars for the most part.

The new monstrous units and the Legendary Lords and Legendary Heroes continue to be examples of fantastic animation and character work.

I can't recommend it at full price. It'd be fine at the old Lord Pack price, perhaps even a little bit higher than the former price to account for the three Legendary Lords and the fact that most of the units in the DLC are things that would have been the single Show Piece unit of those older Lord Packs, but more than twice the price of the old Lord Packs is simply WAY too high a cost for the content on offer.

I'll make this brief.

This game is one of those that really makes me wish there was a middle ground between a positive or negative review.

At it's core, it's moment to moment gameplay, Darktide is fantastic. It captures the weight and intensity you'd expect from combat in the Warhammer 40k setting. Aesthetically it hits the mark beautifully as well.

Outside of that? It is repetitive as all get out with only a small number of maps, most of which look VERY similar to each other, being seemingly largely built out of the same set of 'Industrial' area assets. There are no subclasses as of yet meaning there is a hard cap on meaningful progression. The loot and 'crafting' systems are a joke, and the modifiers to each mission are weak at best.

The best way to describe this game is...it's like an easier version of Welcome to the Game themed after the movie The Autopsy of Jane Doe. It's absolutely fantastic. Though the demo doesn't do a GREAT job of portraying what the game itself is like. It's much more mechanics and mystery driven with ambient spooks happening, while the demo presents it as if it's going to be more of a walking-sim type game with occasional body preparation.

An excellent faction, and a vast improvement over the incredibly shoddy Warhammer 1 Chaos Warriors launch race pack. A unique playstyle based on being able to place your own major settlements wherever you want (including in enemy territory) on the campaign side, and an almost purely Monstrous Infantry roster on the Battle side. Though they do suffer somewhat in one specific area. Their unique mechanic of "Ogre Contracts" is severely under-powered, the rewards being incredibly minor making them effectively worthless outside of the very earliest part of the early game.

Most of the negative reviews are protests against the fact that it's a pre-order DLC originally rather than commenting on the actual quality of the content.

This game was good. Until the sequel came out and was essentially the same game but improved in every way. Don't bother with this, just pick up Attack on Titan 2. They're the same price.
