Don't let the reviews make you think this game is utterly fantastic. The only reason it's getting such good reviews is all because of nostalgia. Let me explain...

In audiovisual terms, Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap is a gorgeous title. The art, the animations and the music are all top-notch and the developers have done a wonderful job. You can even switch between modern and retro graphics and sound, any time you want. However when it comes to the gameplay, things get weird. This game is actually a 1:1 recreation of the original game and nothing else. This means that the developers have not tried to change anything in the game or add anything to it. For those who have played the original Sega Master System game, this is a blessing. But for those who expected a modern take... welcome to hell.

There's no tutorial. There's no indication as to where you should go to. There's no map. The controls are slippery. Jumping actually carries your momentum and make you slide a bit after landing. You have to switch between the main character's different forms by going into certain rooms (before getting access to and buying a certain sword). You can get a game over right in the first 10 minutes of the game! Hell, I didn't even know what the heck was happening in the first boss fight as my character hovered above the boss after getting hit each time!

I'm sorry but I cannot see the appeal and I'm sure many more won't as well. I commend the developers for being this much faithful to the classic game and for creating such gorgeous visuals, but this game Is not for the likes of me. I have no nostalgia for this game (I have only played the Sega Genesis Wonder Boy games) and I am busy enough with my everyday life that I don't want to bother with something that makes me go "What in tarnation should I do now?!".

I can only recommend this game to those who have played the original same on SMS and utterly love it. I advise the rest of the players to try "Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom". It's a modern take on the series and a fantastic successor to them.
