This game is a lot of fun.

I liked:
  • The grappling hook, which you can use to move around quickly, or tether multiple objects (or enemies) together.
You start with 2 cables (so you can tether 2 pairs of objects/enemies), and you can unlock up to 6 cables in total.
You can retract the cables, and therefore send enemies flying, or give barrels enough speed so that they explode on impact, or crash helicopters into the ground, or ... (be creative!)
  • The parachute and wingsuit, which you can deploy and retract instantly, as many times as you want
  • The large open world
  • The explosions (you can use guns, grenades, rocket launchers, C4)
  • The vehicles: cars, motorcycles, helicopters, planes, boats (there are both civilian and military vehicles in each category)
  • The graphics
  • The landscapes

You have to free towns, military bases and outposts, basically getting rid of the evil general's men and influence. And of course, by "freeing", I mean "blowing everything up".

There are challenges throughout the world, including land/air/sea races (against time), shooting challenges, destruction challenges, wingsuit challenges.
The wingsuit challenges are the hardest. I did almost everything there is to do in the (base) game (no DLC), however some of the wingsuit challenges are so frustrating that I settled for 4 out of 5 stars on several of them (I'm talking about the ones near the highest mountain in Insula Striate).

The story is... wait a minute, you wouldn't play a Just Cause game for the story?! The story is basically just an excuse to make you visit different places, and take in part in various activities.

A word of warning though: You need 16 GB of RAM (or more). People with "only" 8 GB have reported all sorts of problems.

Also, the graphic settings are somewhat limited: only 1 ambient occlusion setting (SSAO ON/OFF), anti-aliasing is either FXAA, SMAA or SMAA 2TX (the engine is not compatible with MSAA), and some of the textures are quite blurry (especially roads), even with everything maxed out.

I really like the atmosphere they've built with this game.

The game looks great, and the performance is good.

During the first half of the game, the story mainly exists to make you visit different locations, meet various people, perform different activities, and upgrade different parts of your car. The story gets a little more interesting in the second half of the game.

You'll spend about 60% of the time driving, and 40% on foot.

The game isn't very difficult (apart perhaps for 1 or 2 races that are tough to finish in one piece).

On foot combat is based on Quick Time Events, but moves are varied enough so that it doesn't get boring.

You can spend anywhere from 20 to 80 hours on this game, depending on if you focus on the main story, or if you do everything the game has to offer.

I'm also pretty happy about the price I paid: €16.99 during the Steam Holiday Sale 2015 (66% off less than 4 months after release).

Highly recommended to anyone who likes open world games and car games.

BEFORE YOU BUY: The Steam version (available since 2015) is 100% identical to the FREE Windows version that was released in 2009 and is available on Remedy's website.

That being said, the game itself is fun, the soundtrack is good, the UI is polished, and even the graphics are nice (albeit simple).

For me, this game holds some nostalgic value, as it was one of the first video games I've played.
If you've never played it, just keep in mind it's a game from 1996, and forgive it its low resolution and lack of auto-save.

Differences with the original DOS version:
- No multiplayer
- No ending cinematic

It works fine on Windows 10.
