Good story (or at least a good way to present a so-so story) is usually seen even within few minutes of a game. It's called a "hook". Read books on how to write books, they explain that: your beginning needs to hook the reader what follows is used to reel him in. Within 1.3 I was not hooked. A good example can be Rise of Tomb Raider: while it's story is far from the best in the world, but the way it is presented and the way it binds with actual gameplay - they hook you and hook you good.
