I wish I could leave a "mixed" review. I was scared of buying this game after reading some of the reviews. I have now played this game for 1.3 hours, here is my take on the game:

PROS

The game looks good, sometimes even great/beautiful. Playing with a controller is a very enjoyable experience, as long as you tweak your sensitivity. I have not tried playing with a wheel yet, so I can't say how it feels (or if it even works).

The radial menu, from which you control the AC, radio, windows etc. is executed in a manner that makes it easy to use. You get used to it very quickly.

Car customization is okay. For a game like this, it doesn't have to be too in-depth. You can change the paint job, rims, add a spoiler, change the taxi sign, upgrade you engine etc.

There is an okay selection of cars to buy, ranging from a hatchback to a van. You have to level up in order to unlock them. The cars are nicely detailed, especially for a game like this.

The performance is good, I'm getting 90-100 fps on the highest settings with my 6800XT. Haven't had any framedrops or stutters.

CONS

The AI will constantly ram you, which seems to be a known issue at this point. I wouldn't mind if a car would in some rare cases crash into me, but now it happens at almost every traffic light. It's not nice.

AI will also get stuck at intersections, especially if a pedestrian has just crossed the road. Sometimes it takes them 5 seconds to realize that the pedestrian has crossed, sometimes they just get completely stuck.

Pedestrian AI will start to twitch in front of the pedestrian crossing before crossing and after crossing. Sometimes they get stuck and go back and forth. The pedestrian AI is way too unpredictable and unrealistic at times.

The AI traffic cars look horrible compared to the players cars. It is something that I keep noticing and it bothers me quite a bit. There are some that look good, but most of them look bad. I know this might not be a con for others, but it is to me

There are some curbs you cannot climb onto. I tried going over one and it acted like a brick wall, damaging my car.

Your car will also slide when letting in or letting out a customer, causing you to hit whatever is behind you or in front of you.

Overall opinion

I mean, the game is okay. It has its problems, but the developers have acknowledged this. It can be a fun game to play, especially when they fix some of the issues. Is it worth 30€ in its current state? I'm not too sure, which is why I am debating if I'm going to refund it for now.

I hope more features and content will be added later on.

Thanks for reading!

Edit 19.3.2024: Decided to refund it for now.

Does it stutter from time to time? Yes.
Is it better looking visually than Dirt 2.0? No.
But is it fun at its best? Yes.

I've enjoyed my 5 and a half hours with WRC so far. The vehicle handling is very good and feels very responsive. The selection of tracks and cars is very nice and the tracks are fun (and some very challenging, looking at you Mediterraneo). The builder mode is a cool feature while a little bland.

I haven't really had any major issues with this game, the only problem I have had a few times is stuttering. First it used to happen when you first go to a track after launching the game and then it didn't happen again. Now it happens even after a longer session. While a small stutter sounds like nothing, it can really mess up your concentration. The developers have acknowledged this issue though and have said that a fix is on the way.

30-10-2023 - Update after 35 hours:
The game is still fun, performance got a bit better with a patch. I get 40fps at 30k population in a dense city, used to get 30. Very much playable. I highly recommend you give it a try at least, it's great.

Please for the love of god, tweak your settings before playing. I keep seeing reviews from people who have clearly not tweaked their settings saying that the game runs like ♥♥♥♥.
I get that it might not run well on all systems, but at least give it a try. Tweaking only takes a few minutes.

24-10-30 - Original review:
I understand the game is not optimized properly, but I'm getting 40fps on a 6800XT + R9 5900X (this is at 1000 population). It is playable, you just have to tweak your settings. The game looks great and is fun to play. I love this game.

Payday 3 is a step up from Payday 2 in terms of gunplay and many new gameplay mechanics. The game still feels like Payday game, so it is very easy to get into if you're coming from Payday 2 like me. Server issues are horrible.

The good

There are many things to like in this game. As I mentioned in the beginning, gunplay is vastly improved. It feels so much better in terms of feedback, hitmarkers are a nice touch. New gameplay mechanics include minigames for such things as lockpicking and cracking a safe. Both minigames are easy. You can also open and close doors now.

Hostage negotiations early on in the heists are also a very nice addition since you can now delay the initial police assault for a little bit. Even a small delay can have a big impact on how successful you are, because when the police assault starts, it goes from 0 to 100 real quick.

You can now also slide around and vault things (this is awesome). It makes getting over obstacles and going through windows so much easier.

There now are three different security level areas in the heists:

First there are the public areas. In these areas the player is allowed to move around freely without rising any suspicions (unless you start doing something suspicious, like picking a lock or placing a gadget, like a micro camera).

Then there are private areas. In these areas most civilians won't react to you, but security guards will. If you get caught by a guard in a private area, you will be escorted out of the private area. You can get caught multiple times without failing the heist (at least as of now, I have a feeling this will be changed in the future).

Lastly there are the secure areas. In these areas, civilians will react to you and report you to the guards if you are seen. Getting caught in there areas by a guard can fail your heist, since they will no longer escort you out of the area but will arrest you instead.

Enemies:

Enemies in Payday 3 have been improved quite a lot. They will be more tactical in their decision making. They will still rush you like in Payday 2, but not as much. They will move in groups more, move behind a shield and try to surround you.

Enemies like the bulldozer, shield, tazer (now a zapper) and cloaker make their return. They play out pretty much the same way as they did in Payday 2. There are some new attacks these enemies can do. The bulldozer for example will run at you in order to try and stun you. The shield will push you if you get too close, this will also stun you. And the cloaker will try to destroy your deployed items.

Weapons:

The weapon selection in Payday 3 is not too large currently at launch. There are only a few shotguns, rifles and pistols. There are more assault rifles and SMG's, but the selection still isn't that big.

Modifying these weapons works a bit differently in Payday 3 than it did in Payday 2. In order to unlock mods for your weapons, you will have to use them and level them up. It is fairly quick and easy so I haven't had any issues with this. You will still of course have to pay for these mods once you unlock them.

The game also includes premade weapons which you can buy with the in-game currency. These weapons come modified and cannot be modified further (I think). These weapons also come with unique paintjobs.

Stealth:

Stealth is also improved. You can now do more things unmasked. You can pick locks, carry bags and hack computers. You can also run and crouch while unmasked, but cannot jump (remember this, since you can move to some spots while unmasked where you need to mask up in order to get out).

The number of radios you can answer is dependent on the difficulty you do the heist on. On hard, you can answer 4 radios. On very hard, it drops to 3. I'm not sure if it goes lower on overkill, haven't tried that difficulty yet.

There also are no more bodybags. Instead, you can carry bodies. You can also answer a guards radio if you're carrying them.

The bad

Honestly, there are not that many things that I dislike. In the beginning I didn't like the new menu UI, but I've now gotten more used to it. I think it could still be better, but it is not bad.

The bot heister AI is good, but it could be better. On a few occasions, I've had the bots get stuck in one corner of a room. This usually results in them getting downed and detained. This is frustrating especially if you're in the end of an heist. This might not be a big deal for some, especially if you only play online but for me it is a big deal since I like to play by myself sometimes.

Security guards are a bit stupid at times. Especially if you get caught in a private area by the same security guard multiple times. It apparently isn't suspicious to them how the same person gets caught in the same place multiple times. I think there should be a limit how many times you can get caught in the same area by one guard. I have a feeling this will be addressed in the future.

One thing that I dislike a lot is the "always online" part. This means you cannot play heists solo if you don't have internet connection or you connection isn't stable. You can also get disconnected mid heist if the servers happen to go down.

Final verdict

Payday 3 is a great sequel to Payday 2. It is still very familiar to us that have played Payday games in the past. New enemy types and updates to existing enemies make the game a bit more unpredictable and challenging. Most gameplay mechanics work as they are intended. I've had tons of fun in my first 8 hours with the game. There aren't that many heists right now at launch, but I've had fun replaying the heists (I haven't even played all the heists yet). More heists will come as paid DLC's and some will be free (confirmed in Overkills Twitch stream).

No matter which edition you buy, you will probably have fun if you liked the last 2 Paydays. (Depending on if you can get into a heist, the servers are so bad)

Keep those helmets flying!
