The Extraction Shooter game-mode from the beta has been overhauled completely to take away a lot of what made it engaging and fast-paced. Weapons are now purchased via currency from an arbitrarily limited set of 6 options of randomised type and level which refreshes every few hours (or you can pay the extraction currency to refresh it automatically). The airdrops are now also purchased for a one-time use each.

Where once you could reliably call in a set of guns 3 times in a match which could compensate for the weaknesses of your mecha or amplify the strengths based on how you wanted to play now each one of those and each gun is going to be a one-time use thing and if you die you lose the guns you have on you forever. Where it used to be viable to engage readily with the PvE elements on the map now there is a cost to dying that only incentivises players to just hide and poach one-another. Taking damage from PvE objectives can no longer be healed for free from your healing airdrop, everything costs the currency now so why gimp yourself by fighting trash when you can let the other saps do it for you.

A lot of the risk/reward decision making depth has been lost, as has the build variety as I stated before.

Worse still the game's premium currency prices are truly obscene and the way to earn that currency within the game is all tied to an in-game auction marketplace for items. In a lot of ways it's not the game we played in the Beta and these changes are baffling and disappointing.

The formula for great fiction.

Your Kink + Your Philosophy + Esoteric Magic System

Combine with excellent gunplay and movement and you've got one of the best (if most awkward to recommend) Boomshoots in a long time.

Solid Dungeon-Keeper styled game. My only complaint is it needs more options to streamline minion-management but other than that the game is solid for it's price-point.

Simple, charming, good mechanics, feels like a real place. Had a lot of fun, will probably replay it again some day.

This game should be welcomingly familiar to any Jet Set Radio or Crazy Taxi alumni. Tonally it's wearing it's disdain for corporate inauthenticity and dehumanisation on it's sleeve, visually it's low on detail but high on style, and mechanically the movement flows quickly and satisfyingly from jump to grind to sprint.

Occasionally there's a bum line-read from a minor character and it's a bit buggier on launch-day than I'd like but thus-far it's all been cosmetic so I can't say I'm particularly put-out by any of it.

Also you get bonuses for destroying surveillance cameras so bonus points for blade-running. Splendid stuff.

Early Access Review
I'm over an hour in, just completed the prologue, and I gotta say I'm not impressed with anything other than the mechanics.

The characters and units feel flat and absent of the personality I've come to expect from the Blizzard games whose mantle Stormgate is attempting to take up. There's so much less to Amara after an hour of play than the first few lines of space-cowboy Jim Raynor or noble shaman Thrall, even down to the confirm and poke dialogue. For many that might not be a problem but I have always valued how much personality I feel from Warcraft and Starcraft units and heroes. I'm not even going in expecting deep and complex story just something to grab hold of atmosphere-wise.

The world has been taken over by demons and scavengers pick through the wreckage but the art design is flat like Plasticine. I want to be getting Starcraft meets Diablo but I'm getting Overwatch meets Hearthstone. Much as with the feel of the units and characters the art itself doesn't connect with me and the entire affair feels sanitised like a saturday morning cartoon, only those cartoons tended to have more personality in their character and art design so... it's a real shame to see the game in this state.

If Blizzard's RTS games were extremely adolescent in their approach Stormgate could be described as being extremely childish. Is it more financially viable to have a scrubbed-clean approach in the modern gaming space? I don't know. But I am disappointed to see the team chose that approach over the scrappier, goofier, edgier games which I was hoping it would be inspired from.

I probably won't refund it because I do wanna see Frost Giant succeed and the RTS genre come back from obscurity but hot damn I hope these elements are part of the 'early access' stuff that gets fixed because I'm just not feeling any of it.

An excellent Metroidvania with a fresh take on the genre and a gameplay loop which remains engaging the whole game through. The story is also impressively raw and affecting. A wonderful experience.

This game is very disappointing but it has potential.

It's a generally solid ARPG but frequent problems include:
Melee enemies suddenly getting massive speed boosts from nowhere making it harder to kite them.
Areas of ground hazards with extremely high tick damage that can make kiting enemies impossible.
Rares who have the ability to continually heal themselves and everyone around them up to full with no indication of counterplay besides exploiting their AI to peel that unit specifically.
A severe lack of movement abilities despite AoEs and dodgeable, high-damage abilities and high-speed projectiles being extremely commonplace.

If not for the fact you can brute force most encounters by respawning and reengaging the fight before the enemy has regenerated HP this game would be extremely frustrating and the rough edges on its combat would cripple the challenge factor of higher difficulties making the game only playable on lower difficulties with non-telegraphed spikes in difficulty which will only occasionally kill you (as opposed to consistently). As it stands it's a decently stable game (one dungeon provided multiple crashes) with mostly intuitive mechanics which provide decent challenge provided you can withstand and/or work around the cheap-shots the game takes at you every now and then.

Fun game but scuffed to heck and back and gameplay is prone to swing wildly between satisfying and frustrating at a moment's notice.

Hands-down my favourite Boomer-Shooter.

A colourful, characterful, immersive world with satisfying gunplay and exploration I find myself returning to again and again.
