I have to admit I was a bit reluctant about playing this game since I’m not a fan of ryona or any games featuring non-con scenes, but Crimson Colosseum was so good I could still enjoy it, even if the 18+ content isn’t right up my alley.

Pros
- Interesting story that features multiple endings
- Artistically, it’s pretty
- Unique combat system

Neutral
- Some scenes may be a bit too hardcore for some people

Cons
- The skill system relies too much on randomness
The game’s resolution is small and you can’t change it

Story
The game tells you the story of Sachi, a young adventurer that was kidnapped by a group of bandits and forced to become a red-collar slave. She then has to win eight duels in a row in 20 days to regain her freedom, but she'll become a sex slave if she's either defeated or didn't meet the deadline. The plot is interesting, and I like how some game mechanics like the New Game+ are part of the story. It may be a bit too dark for some people, though, since the protagonist has to deal with a lot of abuse, and she ends up either dying or experiencing a fate worse than death in most endings.

Gameplay
This aspect is where Crimson Colosseum truly shines. The game is a mix of your standard RPG with exploration and time management. Each day has 5 phases in which you can train Sachi, fight in the colosseum, or explore the town to purchase equipment and interact with its inhabitants.

One of the things that make this game different is the lack of a proper level system. You increase your stats by winning bouts or using the training area instead of leveling up as you’d do in any other RPG. Each time you visit the training area, you can spend up to 5 phases in it with varying results. Usually, you get a decent result from training, but sometimes it can go so well you get a big stats increase, or so bad there’s barely any improvement.

At first glance, the combat looks similar to the kind of battle system you’d find in most HRPGs, but it incorporates some new elements that make it very original. For starters, a QTE will pop up when you get restrained or you find an opening to counterattack, and thus it’s up to the player to succeed instead of leaving everything to chance. However, what makes combat so unique is the skill system. You roll a 6-sided dice every time you use a skill, and the skill you use is determined by the number you get.

Learning skills is also different. Here, you have to use the SP you get by training or winning duels to unlock skills. Learning the same skill again allows you to set them in more than one slot as long as there’s enough EP available, and you’re rewarded with extra EP once you max out a skill.

The game also puts more emphasis on getting the player to understand how each skill works. Sometimes, using the correct one against a particular enemy can make a fight a lot easier and save you from spending some valuable time training. On the downside, the system’s inherent randomness makes the last few duels a pain in the butt, to the point you assign the same skill to multiple slots just to make sure you’ll get the one you want.

Audiovisuals
Artistically, the game is pretty. Both the character portraits and the CGs are very well-drawn and detailed. Sadly, the game’s resolution is rather small, and there’s no way to change it. The soundtrack is decent. Even though none of the songs are memorable, each of them fits the scenes they play in.

Final Thoughts
All in all, I recommend this game. It's equally fun and challenging, and anyone into RPGs will like it. Some scenes are brutal, though, so I advise anyone who can't stand hardcore non-con stuff to play it without applying the uncensor patch.
