TL;DR: If you're a fan of Magic The Gathering (paper or digital) then at least check it out for yourself, it is free.

"Yes" recommendation is really hard for me to put as I'd like to say "Maybe" instead...read below to find out why.

As a long time veteran player of both paper Magic and the Duels series, this game is a very mixed bag.

One thing you may notice if you are an experienced player is the new set (the titular Magic Origins set) and how they did a pretty hard reset on card power and overall OP nature of creatures/spells etc. It's not overall a bad thing, I guess it's kind of nice to see a return to the more simpler roots of the game where a strong creature with no special powers of it's own can be enough to win you the game.

In regards to the presentation and interface...for a mostly 'online only' type of game, largely focused around multiplayer and the community, they really failed in my opinion with this game. As many other reviews state, there are large problems with matchmaking, stability of connection once in a match, certain game conditions causing freezes, and people not even able to launch the game at all.

The worst of the problems above have been addressed in a few different updates, but mostly the problems still pervade the experience and leave a bad taste in your mouth. Want to play the very popular 2 headed giant mode where 2 players go head to head with 2 other players each with their own decks but the teams share life totals? Well, unless you like random players who may or may not be familiar/skilled with the game then good luck. I have had about a 10% success rate with inviting/being invited to a partner's game. The netcode just seems to be garbage that can't properly place you in a match.

In addition to these issues above, there have been a lot of other glaring issues that are a confusing step down from previous iterations of the series. If you want to chat to each other, you either have to add the random player you are teamed with in 2hg for instance and steam message them back and forth (if they even accept your invite or you can find their name with the 2,000 other players of same names) or maybe do skype/Team Speak etc outside of the game. This is ridiculous to not even have an in game chat option in a game so focused around teamwork and strategy. There is not even a text chat box as in previous versions. This is a huge missed opportunity and hurts the experience a lot.

In summary, again, if you are a fan of the series or a noob just trying to see what all the fuss is about, this game is a serviceable introduction to the series. On the other hand if you are a seasoned vet, even of the digital games, you might look to some of the older versions for an overall better experience.

Score: 6/10 (hoping to improve this rating if they ever improve the game)

Early Access Review
This game isn't too bad at all.

Yes, it's true that the studio behind it had some issues for the past 3/4 of a year or whatever but word is that somebody else has secured the rights and will be moving forward with development and support!

It's your typical FPS fare, but with a mechwarrior style twist. You can choose different mechs and upgrade them by gaining experience levels during matches or using their P2P currency (of course!).

It's more about your skill than your loadout though, so don't let that stop you from trying this game out!
