I used GIMP way back when for spriting things ... then I was told about Aseprite. Obtained this thing about a year ago and it is surprisingly extremely effective at just that; spriting things. It has frames - and allows you to play them out frame-by frame or on a loop, which is epic.
I will note that I didn't figure out about frame tags until recently; they, however, are extremely helpful pls use them.
