10/10 would be eaten alive by a lesbian princess again

Disclaimer: My game time isn't accurate; I originally played the itch version of the game (redownloaded it here so I could leave a review...and get the achievements). A more accurate estimate of playtime would be 2.5-3 hours to read the whole thing.

It gets so lonely here is a yuri horror visual novel centered around encounters with yandere characters. The game expertly balances a fairy tale mood, an atmospheric writing style, wonderful and unique art, a UI that nails the "classic freeware visual novel" vibe, a narrator with a distinct personality, and the contrast between sweet romantic moments and violent deaths. You know going in that all of these routes will end in the protagonist's death; a large portion of the appeal of the story is the suspense of watching the burgeoning romantic feelings the MC feels for these girls, as told in soft moments that would not be out of place in a much lighter yuri game, and how these feelings are shattered by the LIs' decision to murder her. Each of the LIs has her own rationale for why murdering the MC in brutal ways is the only way to properly show her love.

If this was the whole of the game, it would still be well worth recommending, especially for fans of the yandere archetype. But in addition to all of this, It gets so lonely here does very interesting things regarding story structure. Rather than having to start a new game to start a new route, completing a route (without picking the option to accept the MC's death) takes you back to the first choice, so it's more like the routes come one after another rather than existing in parallel. And when you finish all three routes, this unlocks a scene which reveals that the narrator is in fact the main villain of the story. For the full story experience, you should start a new game after this, which will eventually conclude the MC's story; starting another new game after completing the second playthrough will give you another scene from the villain's perspective which acts as a final closer. Altogether, it all adds up to one of the best visual novels I've played and one that anyone with an interest in the medium should consider reading.
